Develop your practice and explore a range of coaching strategies to be able to support your riders in long term learning and development in all domains.


What is involved?

This 12 week course takes a blended learning approach, with e-learning and virtual seminars, culminating in a face-to-face practical development day. Explore a range of coaching approaches and understand how people learn and retain motor skills. With guided tutor support and experiential practice, understand how people are motivated and how to create an environment to optimise learning.

Virtual seminars will support coaches through Action Learning Sets to explore their own problem solving. The practical day will provide an opportunity to learn with coaches across a range of disciplines and domains.

E-learning- 2 hours
Virtual Seminars- 2 x 90 minutes
Practical Development day- 8 hours

What will you learn on this module?

This module builds on some ideas introduced in Introduction to Coaching and Coaching in Context, but it is also available as a standalone module for any British Cycling qualified coach who is interested in developing their practice and creating the environment for riders to learn.

Example topics include:

  • Skill Acquisition ideas of long-term learning and retention/transfer of skill, feedback, attentional focus, and perception and action
  • Coaching styles of peer coaching, coaching through problem-solving and guided discovery.
  • Communication – feedback and questioning

How will I be assessed?

Rather than completing an end-of-learning assessment task, the tutor will ensure that they check in with you throughout your learning experience to assess your level of competence and understanding along the learning journey.

Where does this fit in the pathway?

If you are accessing as a new coach in the new framework, the module provides a springboard to make the steps for you to complete the full Coach Award. The final step is the Experiential Learning module to submit your coaching portfolio.

What do I need to register

Minimum Age 18 Years old
Qualifications Activity Coach, Level 2/Club Coach
Coaching Experience Coaching Experience: Coaches should have a minimum of 100 hours of independent coaching.  This supports coaches in the development of their practice.
Riders Coaches will need to work with a group of riders throughout the course programme
