The BMX regional schedule continued last Sunday with the return round of the annual East Anglia v The South Inter-Regional on the track of the Braintree BMX Club. The track and surroundings have seen a lot of work over the winter months to get it ready for the next rounds of the national series in three weeks (July 2/3) which made it an ideal time for rider across the country to gain more track knowledge and almost 380 riders made the journey to take part in a full days action packed racing which was only marred by the wind and rain in the afternoon which was sorely needed but would of been better a few hours later.
Royston had 22 riders taking part in the event covering all ages and abilities and the action started in the novice classes where James Kirby took 4th in the A final and Lewys Francis took 3rd in the B final of the combined 11-13yr. and 14+ class in their first regional level events. In the Experts classes for the more experienced competitors Joshua Abbott was spurred on by being awarded the Rider of the Day accolade at the previous round and took 8th place in the 6 & Under class A final and the 7yr class was once again won by Elliott Bowyer who maintained a near perfect series score so far. Also qualifying for the B final was Callum Barrow who finished in 6th in the Male 8yr class and in the 9 year class Alfie Salmon took the win in the class C final. The clubs three riders in 10 year class had a variable day with James King taking 3rd in the A final and after a fall in the semi final Ted Dalleywater recovered to lead the riders home in the B final with team mate Marmaduke Birt taking 7th in one of the largest classes of the day.
The 11 year class saw Miles Fisher taking another clear win in the A final to earn him the Rider of the day award and with team mate Daniel Blanche taking 3rd it was a good points class for the club, although disaster struck for Matthew Fraser who took a fall in the qualifying races to end his days competition. Another series of clean rides in the 12yr class saw Aaron Dalleywater also taking the win in the A final but in the 13yr class Ethan Vernon was another rider to fall in the semi final only to bounce back and win the B Final. Representing the girls was Faye Godfrey who took 7th in the Female 13-15 year class and in the male 15yr class James Handleigh continued his returned to form with 5th in the A final of another large class and in the 16yr category Jordan Godfrey took 5th in the B Final. The Masters category (30+) saw Alex Shore-Nye take 2nd in the B final and in the surprisingly fast Veterans (40+) class another win for the club went to Lee Alexander. The final classes of the day were the riders on the 24" wheeled "Cruisers" and the ladies 17-29 class saw Royston's Helen Nicholl take top place and in the men's classes Matt Salmon took 3rd in the 35-39yr category C final and Carl Birt took 5th in C final of the 40+ class.
Once all the scores were calculated the Regional Challenge cup went to the South Region with 1970 points, only 50 points ahead of East Anglia!
The next regional event on the race calendar is the return round of the East Anglia v Midland Regional Challenge to be hosted by the Redditch BMX club on June 26th.
Royston's own clubs nights have now started with the gates opening at 6.00pm. See more about the club and BMX racing in the region at www.roystonrockets.co.uk and the BMX East Regional site on www.bmxeast.com or ring 01763 260959 for more information on BMX racing.
Report: Braintree BMX
Braintree Bullets BMX Club hosted the annual East Anglia v The South Inter-Regional on 12th June. 55 Braintree riders competed amongst the364 racers from all over the south of England who ventured to the track to get some race practice for the National races in July.
The clubs efforts were clear in the early morning sunshine as the track and facility looked world class, regrettably as racing commenced the clouds rolled in and the rain started. Luckily the weather didn't dampen the rider's enthusiasm for the racing.
The novice kicked off proceedings and Harry Collins had his first taste of regional success with a 2nd place finish in the 8-10 year olds class. In the 11-13 and 14-16 mixed group, Jack Porter made waves to secure 3rd and Ben Newson was 5th just in front of Luke Coveney in 6th and Jamie Collins in 8th. Kieran Shuttlewood won the B final.
Onto the experts and Tyler Carter who scored solid moto results in the 8 year olds. He breezed into the Semi finals and then qualified for the A final where he finished 5th. Club mates Morgan Spenner and Harrison Boulter also rode in the class and battled with each other in the B final finishing 4th and 5th respectively.
In the 9 year olds; Luke Shriever ride up an age group and battled in the competitive class to a B final win. Thomas Knight rode well and secured 3rd in the C final.
Nine Bullets riders were in the 10 year olds and there were good prospects for A final action. Charlie Ogrady made the grade and went unbeaten all day to take a well deserved win, just in front of club mate Olly Rowe. Cade Moore also made the A final against much more experienced riders and rode to a creditable 6th. Christian White won the B final from Tom Stokes in 2nd after a crash in the semi final and Jake Coombs was 8th. Lee Butson, Jo Carter and Alfie Giles raced in the C final and finished 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively.
Brandan Boulter was the first Bullets rider home in the 11 year olds. He qualified for the A final after a tense semi final and finished 8th on the day. Luke Mayes returned to regional racing with a win in the B final and Noah Shriever was third after missing out on the A final by one place.
In the 12 year olds Shane Redgewell jumped his way into 3rd place in the A final after only being beaten in one moto. Beth Shriever continued her super competitive season with a fantastic 4th and Evan Tulloch was 8th.
After a shaky start to the day, George Moret was like a missile in the 13 year olds A final. Riding up an age group, he capitalised on Dagenhams Lee Golder bad start and romped home to the win. Shane Pavitt rode well and secured 2nd in the B final with Jonathan Boreham just behind in 4th and Josh Butson in 6th. Iwan Williams, Charlie Giles and Cameron Short also rode for the Bullets.
Sam Britton and Daragh Ward showed that the home track advantage can pay dividends in the 14 year olds. They both rode with conviction and were only challenged by each other all day finishing 1st and 2nd in the A final.
Josh Legrove was another rider riding up an age group for more of a challenge and smoothed his way into 6th. Kelsey Dixon battled with the boys in the B final to 3rd place.
Stepping up to the challenge in the 16 year olds; Taylor Andrews was unbeaten all day and secured 1st place with ease for The Bullets. Jake Britton also rode in the A final and after a bad start he worked the track to finish 5th. Lana Redgwell represented The Bullets in the 15-16 year old girls where she finished 5th.
The 17-24 year old class had a mixture of Elite and Jr Men riders along with some fast amateurs. Chris Potter looked set for an A final spot after great moto finishes, but a crash in the semi final saw him in the B final where he rode a convincing win. Olly Cutmore also rode in the B final and styled his way to 4th with Tom Elvin returning to racing in 7th. Darren Eastall made the C final. Potter and Cutmore also rode in the 17-29 year old cruiser class. Potter romped home to the win just in front of James Goodwin who returned to racing after a few years at university, and Cutmore kept them honest in 3rd. In the equivalent ladies class; Nadine Mcfedries rode well to 4th place.
The Masters class found club-coach Julian Allen in the battle for podium finishes. He rode well in the motos after spending the night at the track to keep things secure. In the semi final a bad gate saw him slip down the field but a few strong corner moves saw him find his way to an A final qualifying position where he finished 4th.
In the older Cruiser classes Braintree were represented by Andy Carter and Mark Spenner in the 35-39 year olds. Carter, who also spent the night before on security detail, rode fantastically to 2nd place in the B final with Spenner bringing up the rear in 8th. Ian Porter rode in the 40-44 year old group and wound up 2nd in the D final. Dee Williams was The Bullets sole representative in the 30+ ladies group and found herself in the mix to finish 5th.
The Bullets summer race series commences on Wednesday evenings from 6pm, and coaching classes are run every Saturday weather and race calendar permitting. Please visit www.braintreebmx.co.uk to contact the club and for further details.
