The 2015 British BMX Series gets underway with rounds one and two at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester on Saturday 7 - Sunday 8 March.
The world-leading indoor track is the perfect starting point for 10 rounds of racing across five locations to crown champions across a number of age categories.
Almost 700 riders will take to the start gate at the home of the Great Britain Cycling Team, with the series also visiting the Cyclopark in Kent, Cumbernauld in Scotland and London’s Burgess Park before the finale at Perry Park in Birmingham.
How it works
Riders earn points based on their finishing position at each round of the series. A rider’s best eight results from a possible 10 rounds makes up their total. The rider collecting the most points in their respective category is crowned the series champion.
Elite men
With defending champion Dan McBride absent, Great Britain Cycling Team athletes Kyle Evans, Tre Whyte and Quillan Isidore stand out as strong contenders to draw first blood with home advantage in Manchester.
Both Evans and Whyte recorded wins in last year’s series, but international commitments with the Great Britain Cycling Team meant their participation was limited domestically and they never threatened the overall standings.
Isidore spent 2014 on the path to recovery after a serious injury and has now joined the British Cycling Olympic Academy Programme.
2013 world champion Liam Phillips is not set to ride but Billy Luckhurst, Paddy Sharrock and Ryan Stack – third overall last year – will be present.
The addition of international riders such as Twan van Gendt and Jelle van Gorkom adds another layer of quality to competitive field of riders.
Championship women
A frustrating 2014 saw Charlotte Green spend much of the year on the sidelines having had an excellent start, finishing fourth at the opening round of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in Manchester.
But wrist and shoulder injuries ruled Green out for the bulk of the season, including the world championships, but the 20-year-old still managed a win at round five in Preston.
Peterborough Phantoms BMX Club’s Bethany Campbell and Peckham Challengers BMX Club’s Katurah Davidson both had encouraging campaigns in 2014 and will make the journey north.
Defending champion Abbie Taylor is not set to ride but like the elite men’s event, international riders will bolster the field.
Venue
Opened in 2011, the indoor BMX track at the National Cycling Centre has established a reputation as one of the world’s best - and is set to host its third UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in April.
The facility has an international standard five-metre start hill and an eight-metre supercross ramp.
