The 2009-10 National Trophy Cyclo-Cross series moved on to Derby for the second round and a new venue, Moorways Leisure Centre. The course twisted and turned on playing fields surrounding an athletics track, with conditions a little softer underwheel than at the first round in Devon.

ELITE & UNDER-23 MEN'S RACE

There was a big invasion of riders from Belgium and Germany and they made a huge impact on the race with Johannes Sickmüller (Stevens RT) winning in real style. The German got off the line so quickly, he immediately opened up a gap on the rest before being joined by Jan van Dael (Sunweb Pro-Job) who had finished second to Paul Oldham (Hope Factory Racing) in round 1.

Oldham meanwhile, resplendent in a custom made Yellow skinsuit, was left to chase the two leaders on his own for a good half an hour and it was this action that dominated the race. Meanwhile, in the Under 23 category, Belgian Kristof Kop (AVB CT) was leading, ahead of local rider Tom Last (Sigma Sport/Specialized), both circulating in the top ten.

Whilst  Sickmüller and van Dael worked hard to hold off the challenge of Oldham, the Hope Factory rider persisted in his chase and managed to join them with some 15 minutes of the race to run. Sickmüller responded straight away and quickly rode away from the other two and was able to hold off the other two to the finish. Oldham had to battle hard to get rid of van Dael but did finally manage to put some space between himself and the Belgian to claim second. Oldham increased his lead in the yellow jersey competition. Van Dael was third from Kris Lapere and Kristof Kop (under 23) before the second British rider Stuart Wearmouth in sixth.

WOMEN'S RACE

Despite having only just entered the Junior ranks, Hannah Barnes (Candi TV/Marshalls Pasta)  was a convincing winner of the Women’s race. She started well but a fall saw her trapped in a three way battle for the lead with Jessie Roberts (The Mischiefcard.com RT) and Hannah Shenton (Paul Milnes RT). Hannah Barnes bided her time, before meking her move on a slippery hairpin, which she took tight and fast, before putting the power down and pulling away to claim the win. Behind, Joanne Mcrae (Arctic-Premier RT) came through the riders who were battling for second and third to take the runner-up position at the finish ahead of Jessica Roberts and Genevieve Whitson.

JUNIOR MEN'S RACE

Convincing winner of the Junior race was Tom Moses (Team Wallis-CHH RT) who rode in alone ahead of Dan McLay (Hargroves Cycles) and Perry Bowater (CC Giro). This was one of the most exciting races of the day because while Moses managed to drag himself away from the rest and the lead the race from the front, the chase behind saw the top three changing many times. There was, in particular, a dogged fight back by Dan McLay who fell numerous times and was at one time as low as 11th place. The Leicestershire rider however kept his cool and came through well to take second place alone. Also worth a mention was Perry Bowater who got himself onto the podium place after a well-paced ride.

Bowater not only managed to stay upright the whole race, but he was also able to work his way past many favourites including Luke Gray (Hargroves Cycles), Alistair Slater (Bourne Wheelers CC), Steven James (Pedalon.co.uk),Oliver Webster  (Crosstrax) and Josphua Papworth  (Cult Racing). Papworth was, early in the race, up with the leader Moses but dropped back through the field to finish 8th. Post-Race Rider Reaction

YOUTH RACE

There was a very big field for this race including the first round winners, Edward McParland and Lucy Garner. The boys were set free of the start first and local rider Sam Lowe (Raleigh Avanti RT), the Under 16 Circuit Race champion, took an early lead and, after breaking free of his challengers, the Raleigh rider paced himself well to win the race alone.

Second in the race was Joseph Moses (Bronte Whs/Neophix Engineering), ahead of Hugo Robinson (Ipswich BC) with the yellow jersey, McParland, coming in 4th and losing that leader's garment to Sam Lowe in the process. In the Under 14’s, Solihull’s. Jack Ravenscroft (Solihull CC) won from Harvey Lowe who had the consolation of taking the Green jersey for the series leader. Third was James Shaw.

YOUTH GIRLS' RACE

In the Girls race, Lucy Garner (Leicestershire RC), Hannah Payton (Stourbridge CC) and Bethany Crumpton (Halesowen A & CC) really made a great race of it, with Garner, the series leader, only able to break free of her rivals on the final lap to win the race alone from Crumpton who won a big sprint with Payton. First under 14 girl was Emily Nelson who finished 7th in the race. Post-Race Rider Reaction

With the rain falling, it was Phil Roach (right in blue) who got the best start and he had 50 metres lead very quickly. Photo: Larry Hickmott

VETERANS' 40 PLUS RACE

This race was won by World Champion Marc Druyts (Cycling Team Kessel) who came from behind on the grid to win the race alone. It took Druyts a lap or two to get into his stride but once he did, the rider in the rainbow stripes dominated the rest of the race as a battle for second raged on behind him. At the start, Phil Roach (Coventry RC/Ridecov.co.uk) made his usual rapid getaway, while yellow jersey Chris Young (JD Cycles Ilkley) had a steady start to get away in the top 10.

While Roach opened up a big gap, Druyts started his chase at high speed, whilst Young moved up through the field at his own slightly slower pace. Druyts eventually caught Roach and dropped him into the clutches of Young, who despite falling and going wide on a few bends, had the power to close him down.

Druyts soon had a lead that was never threatened, but Young had to work hard to rid of Roach and it wasn't until the final lap before the Yorkshireman was able to finally break the elasticand cruise in for second, whilst Roach finished third. Last year's series winner, Geoff Giddings (Raleigh Avanti RT) rode a steady race, holding his own in fourth, unable to catch the leaders but equally out of reach of the challengers behind him.

Ian Wright (Over 50's race) survived a fall and a challenge from Roy Hunt and Martin Eadon to win the Over 50 race in his National Champion's jersey and the name of a new sponsor, Raleigh, on it. Photo: Larry Hickmott

VETERAN'S 50 PLUS RACE

Raleigh's Ian Wright won the Over 50s race, wearing the jersey of National Champion. Wright however didn’t have an easy ride of it as both first round winner Martin Eadon (Hargroves Cycles) in the Green jersey and long time boss of this category, Roy Hunt (Colnago-Microshift-Skins), were in contention for much of the race. It was only in the closing stages that Wright was able to break Eadon and Hunt to go on to win the race alone and claim maximum points and the leader’s jersey after his second place in Devon in Round 1. Wright won the series last year.
