After finishing in the top six in every round so far, Sylvain Garde (La Fuga-Sigma) secured his first victory in the 2011-12 London League when he won round six at Fowlmead Country Park in Kent on Sunday.

Garde, 37 and from Croydon, was part of a leading bunch which had looked set to contest a group sprint in the closing stages of the race at the venue near Deal, which was fast and dry.

But he escaped on the final lap, crossing the line around 20 seconds clear of his nearest rival, to claim his first victory after having been on the podium for second and third in the last two rounds.

Second spot went to VC Londres rider Jules Birks, the winner of round three, while Gary Record (Bike Tart.com) was third.

The wide open spaces and dry, fast conditions led to the fast men hitting the front and staying together, while the rest splintered under the pace. But eventually even the leading group fragmented, with Garde proving strongest and taking the win.

Sixth spot went to Jon Lyons (GS Invicta) who was the best veteran, narrowly ahead of Mick Bell (London Fire Brigade CC) who was second vet, while Jack Finch (VC Deal) won the junior prize with ninth overall.

In other categories, VC Deal’s Tom Butler won the youth race comfortably, steadily pulling clear of team-mate Callum Anderton to cross the line around a minute ahead, while Under-14 rider Anthony Anderson (Kingston Wheelers) was third.
