Report: Snowdon Sports
Almost 300 riders tackled a muddy and – for some – rain-soaked round three of the Scottish League at Glasgow’s Mugdock Country Park on Sunday, where Dan Whitehead proved victorious in the senior race.
38-year-old Whitehead, from Ballater in Aberdeenshire, was initially at the front alongside rivals Gareth Montgomerie (GT Racing) and Stephen Jackson (Glashow United CC).
But he was consistently lapping slightly quicker than his rivals, and by the third lap Jackson had dropped off the pace and Montgomerie was also struggling in the muddy conditions, with the rain which had threatened all day now drenching the riders.
By the ninth and final lap Whitehead was 38 seconds ahead of second-placed Montgomerie, while Jackson was now 2-34 behind in third.
The muddy conditions also took their toll on the veterans race, with several mechanicals and punctures forcing a few interesting sprint finishes. But Gary McRae (Leslie Bike Shop) took the win by just 16 seconds from team-mate John McCaffery, while GJS Racing’s Franco Porco was third.
With the veteran men's field separated from the W/V/J race, the women and juniors had plenty of space on course to rip it up - and they certainly did!
A sizeable field lined up for the youth race, with 40 riders benefitting from a fresh and fast course and some super-quick lap times were set.
In the Under 12, Under 10 and Under 8 races the course was extended from previous years' and the riders skill and fitness was well tested.
Finally, the Alpine Bikes Fastest Lap of the Day Award went to Calum MacGowan with a storming time of 5:57, which wins him a £50 Alpine Bikes voucher.
