REPORT - SENIOR & UNDER-23 MEN
Paul Oldham extended his lead in the national Trophy Series with his second maximum points haul in round 2 at Leicester Leys Leisure Centre in Leicester – but once again he was the second man over the line after losing out to a Belgian visitor.
Jelie Brakman (Van Der Vurst CT) took the win after a race-long battle with Oldham, while Jody Crawforth had to settle for third spot once again and trails Oldham by 8 points in the series the pair have dominated in recent seasons.

Crawforth was out of the blocks quickly with Oldham and Luke Gray (Babco CT) on his wheel, but Oldham and Brakman - who was a late entry into the race - were soon at the front and this duo soon opened up a gap of around five seconds. Oldham was doing most of the driving and once or twice it looked like he was leaving his Belgian rival behind.
But three laps from the end Oldham crashed on a fast corner, prompting Brakman to attack. A second fall on the same lap for Oldham dislodged his chain, and although he managed to sort the problem and get going again, Brakman was long gone.
Behind them, Crawforth was battling with Xandro Meurisse (Babco CT), Kenny Geluykens (Asfra RT, Belgium) and David Fletcher (Boardman Elite). Fletcher attacked and was third for a time, but he punctured and after a bike change he dropped back. Crawforth also had problems with his choice of front tyre, and a change of machine was also necessary for him.
Halfway around the final lap Luke Gray lost touch with the chasing pack a little, but just managed to stay clear of Steve James, the Hargroves Cycles and Scott UK’s Kenta Gallagher, who had enjoyed an almost race-long battle and were Gray's main rivals for the Under-23 series points.
Gallagher was drawing in the crowds as virtually the only rider to bunny-hop the boards, which gave him a slight advantage over James who chose to run over the obstacles, but James always managed to pull back the time elsewhere and got the better of his rival on the line.

What the riders said: After crossing the line, winner Jelie Brakman reflected on the key moment of the race: “The other guy (Paul Oldham) made a crash, so that was a sign I had to go, it was still four rounds (laps) to go.” He then turned to his switch from Motocross to Cyclo-Cross, just 4 years ago: “I was cycling a lot for training for the motocross and that went pretty well, I had a lot of fun on the bike, so I made the change to cyclo-cross.”
The two leading British riders, Paul Oldham and Jody Crawforth both had incident packed races, with the sticky, drying mud causing them both problems. Oldham’s problems began with that crash: “I was going quite well, I was strong. The Belgian guy was good, he was covering everything I did, all my little attacks, then I crashed on a fast corner – the front end just went. It got really polished in the corners and I think I had my tubs a touch hard. I lost my confidence after that crash, crashed again and once it starts going wrong it really goes wrong doesn’t it?”
Despite these problems, Oldham managed to hold it together to claim second on the line. Crawforth looked well out of contention after a mid race bike changed robbed him of momentum. However, it proved to be the right decision in the long run: “I think I went with the wrong tyre choice for the first 20 minutes, half an hour or so. I was losing a bit of time to Paul on the corners. You lose a couple of metres on the slippery corners, you’ve got to work hard to get back up. I was feeling pretty empty in the race, so I am pleased to get third. Once I changed bikes I had a lot more grip and cold go a lot faster round the corners and felt a lot better about the whole circuit really.
On the tactics he used to win the sprint for 3rd from a group of four riders, he said: “I tried to get away from them a few times, but couldn’t really get away. I was feeling pretty fast through the corners and I knew coming onto the straight it was quite technical, so I could go pretty fast down through there. so I thought as long as a I lead it, especially round the second half of the last lap, and then just nail it to the finish!”
At the end of a long afternoon of racing, warm late autum sunshine bathed the presentation area where the riders received their prizes from local rider and new World Junior Road Champion Lucy Garner and former World Cycle Speedway Champion Dave Hemsley.

VETERAN 40:
Jim Bryan (Zepnat RT) made it two wins from two races when he took victory in the over-40s race. The 40-year-old from Alfreton in Derbyshire won the opening round two weeks ago by just seven seconds, and his margin of victory was similar this time with Wheelbase rival Noel Clough being just eight seconds off the pace following a race-long battle.

A crash at the second corner of the race as the riders headed into the quarry area caused bunching for most, but Darren Atkins (Team Jewson), Clough and Bryan all managed to escape the delay and forged ahead, while Chris Young (Wheelbase) and Greg Simcock (Team Corley Cycles) chased hard behind.
On the third lap, Bryan attacked and got a gap on his rivals which caused the group to fragment under the pressure. Mid-way through that lap Bryan had five seconds on Clough, and while it proved enough to shake off the other riders, Clough was soon back on Bryan’s wheel.
For the final three laps the duo rode together, although Chris Young closed to within 12 seconds at one point as he chased hard and the leaders seemed more worried about each other than the chaser. On the penultimate lap Clough attacked several times but Bryan was in no mood to let him slip away and they were together as the bell sounded.
As he tackled the boards and rounded an off-camber section Bryan gained a small gap on Clough and, encouraged by his supporters, he put the hammer down and held on for victory by six seconds, while Chris Young had dropped back a little from his earlier chase to take third by around 30 seconds, ahead of Team Jewson’s Darren Atkins in fourth.
Wight Mountain’s Sean Williams and Greg Simcock (Team Corley Cycles) had been fighting to get in the mix for the minor placings, but they were caught by Pedalsport team-mates Chris Taylor and Mike Young, who worked well together to see off the challenge.
It was a dramatic improvement for Chris Taylor, who was 22nd in the first round of the National Trophy but was well pleased with his improved placing of fifth in only his second race at this level. He will now benefit from improved gridding at the next round.
Over-40s winner Jim Bryan said: “I wasn’t expected to win the first round, but I guess I was expected to win this one. I went hard early on and we dropped Darren then I attacked but Noel came back to me. On the last lap at the hurdles someone called out that I’d got five yards and I just went for it.”
VETERAN 50:
While Bryan was securing his second win in the over-40s race, it was all change in the over-50s race with last season’s series winner Steve Davies (Team Jewson) taking a convincing win. Davis had missed the opening round, but re-asserted his authority in the category here, with first round winner Mick Bell unable to get into the race.
Davis, the 51-year-old from Devon was over a minute ahead of his nearest rival after dominating the race from the start. Sixth in round one, Dave McMullen (GWR Team) improved to take second spot, while Ian Wright (Cycleshack-Forme Coaching) was third once again, overcoming an tumble at the boards on the firts lap in the process.
JUNIOR MEN:
Cycleshack-Forme Coaching youngster Alex Welburn secured victory in the junior men’s race after leading virtually from the start of the race. The 17-year-old from Burton on Trent in Staffordshire crossed the line 35 seconds ahead of his nearest rival, but in truth his lead was more comfortable than the gap suggests.
He hit the front from the gun, and by the end of the first lap he was six seconds ahead of Adam Martin, a lead which grew slowly but surely as the fast-paced race progressed.
Martin, from Durham, was in no man’s land chasing for much of the race, but staying clear of the chasers, while Round One winner Joe Moses (Paul Milnes RT) was similarly soloing along while behind him the best of the rest were in battle.
On the second lap Towy Racing CC rider William Worrall joined the chase alongside Joe Moses and Thomas Armstrong (Wheelbase), but Moses was soon off alone and chasing the leaders while behind Jake Womersley (Aire Valley RT) fought back well from being outside the top ten early in the race to a final position of fifth.
After the race, Alex Welburn said: “I just found myself in first and decided to go for it. The slippery corners suited me as I’m an MTB rider. I felt strong throughout. I’ve been ill in the summer and lost three months but I’m really getting back into it now. This is brilliant, I’m over the moon.”

WOMEN:
Hannah Payton (Kinesis Morvelo Project) won the women’s race by just six seconds from Round One winner Adela Carter (WXC MTB Team) after leading for much of the race.
She was joined in the early exchanges by fellow Junior Bethany Crumpton (Halesowen A & CC). Crumpton was unable to hold Payton;s pace and dropped back, joining Carter and Jessie Roberts who both seemed to take time to settle down.
In the first round, three weeks earlier, Payton had faded after a strong start, whilst Carter came through with an irresistible charge in the later laps to claim the win. This time, Payton, who had been recovering from a cold in the previous race, was able to ride strongly to the finish and although Carter once again came strong in the latter stages, it wasn't quite enough to claim the win.
Payton, the 17-year-old from Kingswinford in the West Midlands did well to build up a lead of around 20 seconds over Carter and Jessie Roberts (unattached), but that lead was pulled back in the dash for the line, with Carter taking second and Roberts third, another 49 seconds back.
After the race, we spoke to Hannah Payton and she said: “This is amazing, I led into the first corner. I prefer slippery corners when I saw it rain last night I was really pleased. I was carrying a cold at the first round which is no excuse but I felt a lot better today." Carter was closing in the final stages, and she added: “It made me feel I could go all out, it didn’t bother me I had nothing to lose because third was a long way back.”
YOUTH:
Team-mates Daniel Fox and Jack Ravenscroft secured a second successive one-two for Solihull CC in the Under-16 boys race, with Fox taking a narrow win by a bike length from his team-mate, reversing their finishing positions in the opening round in the process.

Earlier in the race they had been joined towards the front by James Shaw (Heanor Clarion) in a repeat of the round one race scenario, but as Fox upped the pace Shaw dropped back and only Ravenscroft could keep up.
Behind the leading trio, Billy Harding (Paul Milnes RT) was battling with Rhos on Sea CC’s Dylan Kerfoot-Robson, but the pace eventually proved too much and Harding powered on to fourth alone.
Daniel Fox (Solihull CC), Youth-16 winner said: “It was pretty fast fro the first few laps then it calmed down. James Shaw was setting the pace for the first half of the race, but he tired and me and Jack (Revenscroft) hammered it. It’s my first national win and I only started winning cyclo-cross races this year. It’s really taking off for me!”
In the under-14 boys race, Daniel Tullet (Hargroves Cycles) went from the gun and simply rode away from his rivals, while William Gascoyne (Heanor Clarion) worked hard to finish 20 seconds back in second.
There was a grand battle for the honours in the Under-16 girls race, with Grace Garner (RST RT) edging ahead of Matlock CC’s Sarah Lomas after a race-long fight.
And Charlotte Broughton (Leicestershire RC) once again proved her class in the Under-14 girls race, powering clear early and passing all but the two leading Under-16 girls.
