Talented junior Adam Martin secured victory in round 12 of the North East League, crossing the line almost a minute and a half ahead of his nearest rival at the end of a sunny but cold event held by Derwentside CC around the grounds of Gateshead International Stadium.

It was Martin’s third victory in the league so far this season, but with only five rides completed so far he will have to complete the remaining three rounds if he is to challenge for the overall title with the required eight rides.

The 17-year-old from Durham was part of the leading group throughout alongside Black Hawk Bikes rival Tony Fawcett, 33 and from Stanley in County Durham, while Darlington’s Keith Murray (Hope Factory Racing) and Steven Ward (MTS) were about ten seconds off the pace by the end of the first of seven laps.

But a mistake on lap three by Fawcett, who slipped on an off-camber switch-back section, gave Martin his chance, and he attacked hard. With a gap quickly established, Martin settled into a good rhythm and pulled away lap by lap to win by 1:28.

Behind them, Murray’s pace saw him drop Ward on the second lap. It proved a disappointing day for league leader Kenny Haswell, the 26-year-old Black Hawk Bikes rider from Sunderland, who could only finish ninth.

Science in Sport’s Kenny Johnson was best of the veterans, while the promoting club’s Alan Taylor was top over-50 and Anne Greig (Perth United CC) was fastest woman.
