Report: Ben Goddard/Snowdon Sports

Stuart Wearmouth (MTS Cycle Sport) used all his mountain bike experience to great use to win the North-East Rat Race series round one.

Wearmouth, 36 and from Bishop Auckland, had to wait until round 14 of the series last year before he took a victory but took the opening round this season in style.

The North East Cyclo Cross Champion from last year came in ahead of Tony Fawcett, from Stanley who won six rounds last year and is also a mountain bike specialist.

Organising club Blackhawk Bikes cheered home Colin Ash to third place and Alan Nixon to fourth.

Junior rider James Edmond, from Darlington, showed a fine display of form to win the junior, veteran and women’s race outright.

The mountain biker who has enjoyed six victories in a successful campaign showed he will be a force to be reckoned this season.

Coming home to take second place was veteran rider James Anderson, from Spennymoor and taking third was Anthony Glover (Derwentside CC)

First lady rider went to 20-year-old Sarah Murray (Leeds University Gryphons Cycling Team).
