National cross country mountain bike champion and series winner Grant Ferguson was a surprise entry in the opening round of the Notts and Derby League and eased into first place.
The Superior-Brentjins rider had been training in Manchester and decided to enter the race and he took victory by 22 seconds.
Dave Collins (Team Hope Factory Racing) finished second to the 19-year-old, just having enough to edge ahead of third-placed Nick Barnes (Zepnat).
Ferguson said: “We stayed in Manchester while we were doing some training so it was one of those where I just decided to enter.
“I did a bit of cross last year and I think did a race in the Notts and Derby a couple of years ago. So yeah, I have done quite a bit but the last cross race I entered was in January.
“I raced it on my mountain bike and the course at Hardwick Hall was a big loop and was quite tricky with some really bumpy parts.
“I’ve got the Mountain Bike World Cup this weekend and then I’m taking some time off. I’ll be back to do some more cross around January hopefully.”
