Nottingham rider Paul Cox (Pedal Power Loughborough) notched up a third consecutive win when he took victory in round nine of the Lincolnshire League, staged by VC Lincoln at Abbey Farm in Bardney, near Lincoln, on Sunday.
The 26-year-old from West Bridgford crossed the line 26 seconds clear of Lincolnshire League regular Mark Cotton (Ellmore Factory Racing) to add to his victory in the West Midlands League the previous week, and his win in round seven of the Lincolnshire League a fortnight ago.
For Cotton, his run of bad luck continues. After getting tape wrapped around his block in the previous race and having to settle for second, he suffered a puncture at Bardney, and had to ride back to the pits on a flat tyre in search of a new machine.
Cox led off the line with Cotton hot on his heels, and the two tussled well for the opening lap. They had around 30 seconds over a chasing group by lap two, and they ploughed on together until Cotton suffered his deflation, and dropped back.
He got a spare bike quick enough, but Cox put the hammer down and left his rival in no man’s land. Cotton managed to stave off the chasing pack, but he couldn’t catch Cox who crossed the line 26 seconds ahead, while third spot went to veteran Greg Simcock (Team Corley Cycles), 2-26 down.
The course is located mainly on challenging open farmland, and a stiff wind proved to be a help as much as a hindrance for the riders, with strong men able to maximise their advantage.
Simcock took the veterans’ prize from fourth-placed Darryl Hewson (Ellmore Factory Racing) who was 35sec back, while third vet was Matt Denby (Team Jewson) in fifth overall and just 29sec behind Hewson.
VC Lincoln’s Samantha Thoy was fastest female, while Ollie Fairless was best junior.
In the youth race, Lincsquad rider Max Williamson took a convincing victory by more than a minute from runner-up James Armstrong (VC Lincoln), while Robert Ward (Bourne Wheelers) was third, almost three minutes further back.
