Giles Drake cruised to a sixth win of his North West League season in the Clayton Vale Classic on Sunday.

The Herbalife-Leisurelakes rider was behind Grant Ferguson (Superior Brentjens) and Martin Woffindin (Cyclesport Pendle) for the first two laps but made his move and went out to lead the race.

Ferguson, who was using a mountain bike, couldn’t keep pace with Drake and as the race wore on, the lead grew.

Despite his bike dragging, Ferguson put in a solid performance to finish second, around 20 seconds behind Drake. Woffindin held on for third spot.

Giles Drake said after the race: “I got a good lead but Grant was on a mountain bike, I think it started to drag a bit as the race went on. I didn’t take too many risks, just made sure I stayed away from the rest of them.

“The course is slightly varied from last year, there are a few extra loops - it was all pretty solid. I’m in good form and the legs are good. I was at the Inter-Areas last week and I was just a few seconds behind Adam Martin so I’m going well. I’m very happy.

Roy Davies (Team Elite) won the veteran race and first woman was Becky Preece (Contessa Scott). The youth race was won by Matthew Walls (Velocity W40) and the top girl was Kim Baptista (Mid Lancs BMX).
