Kye's Profile
Nicknamed the Prince of Peckham, Kye Whyte's trajectory towards the upper echelons of the BMX world began with a European championship silver and a world cup victory in 2018 and 2019, before claiming a silver medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. This summer, he will be hunting for another Olympic medal as he competes at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
BMX racing has always been a family affair for Whyte who appeared destined for a career at the top of the sport almost from birth. Whyte was introduced to the sport at the age of three at the legendary Peckham BMX Club in London where his father was a coach, his mother the secretary and where his older brothers, Daniel and Tre, regularly competed.
After winning a host of British junior titles, Whyte followed in the wheels of brother Tre and joined the Great Britain Cycling Team in 2017 - the eighth member of the Peckham club to have reached those heights.
In his first season of senior competition, his development continued, most notably in August 2018 when he held off French world champion Sylvain Andre to claim silver behind teammate Kyle Evans at the inaugural UEC European BMX Racing Championships in Glasgow.
In April 2019, Whyte recorded his first ever world cup victory, fittingly on the Manchester track he now calls home.
Whyte was less lucky in that year’s world championships in Zolder, Belgium as he was caught behind a crash, dropping to fifth place - one place lower than he had finished in the European championships in Valmeira, Latvia earlier in July.
The original Olympic year of 2020 opened with Whyte picking up a second place finish in the Brathurst world cup in Australia, before the Covid-19 pandemic brought the season to a close.
But May 2021 saw the young rider return to world cp action with a fourth place finish in Verona, Italy, as he continued his preparations for Tokyo. Selection to the Great Britain squad for the delayed Olympics in 2021 was Whyte’s reward and he did not disappoint, delivering Team GB’s first ever BMX Olympic medal by riding to silver behind the Netherlands’ Niek Kimmann.
Following on from his Olympic success, Whyte posted a series of strong results in a consistent 2022 season, including an impressive gold medal at the UEC BMX Racing European Championships in Dessel, Belgium, and silver at the UCI BMX World Championships in Nantes, France.
The 2023 UCI BMX World Championships in Glasgow were a rare miss for Whyte, as he failed to qualify for the final after veering off his line on a bend during the semi-final. However, two silver medals at the UEC BMX Racing European Cup that year in Verona, Italy and Valmiera, Latvia underscored Whyte’s consistency and confirmed him as one of the biggest medal hopes for Paris.
Whyte has competed on the celebrity reality television show Dancing On Ice and is part of a community project set up by his brother – and former world number three-ranked BMXer Tre – to facilitate opportunities for young people in sport in his local area.
