Ollie's Profile
Ollie Wood has been part of the Great Britain Cycling Team for over 10 years, representing his country as part of the track endurance squad at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and achieving a team pursuit world title in 2022, among many other successes.
As a young rider, in 2013 Ollie paired up with Olympic champion Ed Clancy to break the 1km Madison time trial record in a time of 54.537 seconds – a record previously held by Sir Chris Hoy and Arnaud Tournant. It was an eye-catching performance from the then 18-year-old and, also a sign of success that was to follow on the international track stage.
2014 saw Wood become a double National Track champion at elite level for the first time before winning his first international medal that summer, a silver in the scratch race at the UEC Under-23 European Track Championships in Portugal.
Wood continued to add to his impressive performances as an under-23 rider, becoming European champion as part of the victorious Great Britain team pursuit squad that beat the Swiss during the championships in Athens in 2015.
Wood’s ever-growing list of titles and medals lead to him being selected for his first UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Hong Kong in April 2017, a year in which he showed great development on both the track and the road. He picked up a victory in one of the leading domestic races on the calendar, the Ryedale GP and finished a creditable fourth in the UCI Under-23 Road World Championships road race in Bergen, Norway.
After continuing to showcase his talent on the track, Wood was selected to represent England at his first Commonwealth Games, winning a silver medal in the team pursuit on the Gold Coast in Australia 2018.
The run up to the 2020 Tokyo Games brought with it more promising results including four European championship and four world cup medals and a team pursuit silver at the 2019 world championships; Wood’s first ever world championships medal.
2021 saw Wood selected for his first Olympic Games, heading out to Tokyo for the postponed event, as part of the team pursuit squad. Wood rode alongside Ed Clancy, Charlie Tanfield, Ethan Hayter and Ethan Vernon but Olympic success was not to be and the team finished seventh overall. The team went on to take bronze at the following world championships in October.
2022 proved to be a successful year for Wood, as not only did he podium twice at the Commonwealth games, but he also claimed the overall victory in the omnium during the UCI Track Nations Cup in Glasgow and took home the European bronze medal in the team pursuit during the European Track Champs in Munich. Two months later Wood, alongside Ethan Vernon, Dan Bigham and Ethan Hayter became World Champions in the team pursuit during the track world championships in Paris. During the same championships, Wood also claimed the silver medal in the madison with partner, Hayter.
A year later at the world championships in Glasgow, Wood repeated his silver medal performance in the madison, with new partner, Mark Stewart., following up with a European title in the men’s scratch race in Grenchen, 2023. As well as his impressive performances on the track, Wood proved his capabilities on the road too, taking an impressive win at the national circuit championships in Redcar.
The Olympic year started well for Wood and the men’s team pursuit squad as they became champions once again at the UEC Track Elite European Championships, a very good sign for the year to come.
