Stevie's Profile
Hitting the best form of his life just in time to make his Olympic debut this summer, Welshman Stevie Williams has already had a 2024 to remember. He will take to the roads of Paris in August with a Great Britain squad hoping to challenge for medals.
Showing his potential as an under-23, Williams won the espoirs stage race the Ronde d’Isard, along with a stage of the prestigious under-23 race the Giro Ciclisto d’Italia, informally known as the Baby Giro, in 2018, and shortly afterwards signed his first pro contract with Bahrain-Mehrida, riding his first year at World Tour level in 2019. From then on he struggled with a persistent knee injury, which saw him undergo surgery and subsequently struggle to maintain consistency in training and competition over the next two seasons.
He returned to ride a more comprehensive programme in 2021, and after building his form throughout the season, he rode to victory at the CRO Race in Croatia in the autumn. His first success at World Tour level followed in 2022, as he won a stage of the Tour de Suisse.
In 2023, Williams began a new chapter in his career with Israel-Premier Tech, and consolidated his form, recording some solid results, including a top ten at the Eschborn-Frankfurt one-day classic in Germany, and finishing on the podium at the British National Road Race. In August that year, Williams was able to raise his arms once again at the Arctic Race of Norway, where he won a stage and the overall general classification.
This Olympic year has seen Williams ride to victory on two continents, first as a stage winner at the Tour Down Under in Australia in January, a race where he also topped the standings in the overall general classification, and later during the spring Classics in Belgium, as he triumphed over the apocalyptic conditions and the Mur de Huy to win La Flèche Wallonne. He also finished second on a stage of the Tour de Suisse.
On a punchy parcours in the French capital this summer, Williams will aim to be a contender for gold on his first ever Olympic appearance.
