British Cycling Development rider Steve James produced a crowd-pleasing performance under the sun at Dalby, delighting local supporters and delivering a podium position on the opening day of racing in the Forest. We have the first report, result and photography, along with reaction from the Dalby Dare.

Producing the ride of his life, Steve James commanded the opening two laps of the race, pleasing the partisan crowd with risky overtaking manoeuvres on the courses many more technical A-lines to retake the lead on multiple occasions.
At the halfway stage however, the strength of Dutch XC Champion Michiel Van Der Heijden became apparent, as he rode away from James and Belgian compatriot Jens Schuermans - neither able to match the pace set at the front.
In the closing laps Heijden faded; his initial lead of one minute cut in half on the final lap as James and Schuermans continued to press under the Dalby sun. However, the scale of the lead made it unassailable and in the closing stages Schuermans pulled away from James to take second place.

DALBY DARE
Over 200 riders including Bart Brentjens, Thomas Frishknecht and Burry Stander's dad took to the Dalby World Cup course to complete the Dalby Dare - British Cycling's citizen's event. Taking in an extended loop of Dalby Forest and utilising the already established and renowned trail centre red route, alongside a lap of the latest trail to join Dalby's portfolio; the World Cup course.
Riders were challenged to take on the same trails as the Worlds greatest will race on Sunday's 2010 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup opener, with crowds gathering at both Worry Gill and Medusa's Drop to cheer the riders and jeer the walkers!
Expert mountain bike racer Niall Frost made the front of the ride and was accompanied by mountain bike legend Thomas Frischknecht for the hour and a half of riding - something which made Niall's weekend.
