Anna Fischer wins Two Day Stage Race for Women in Essex

Maxgear RT's German rider, Anna Fischer, has won the Essex Giro Women's 2 Day after winning the final stage. With Rapha Condor CC’s Emma Grant carrying a slender lead over National Series leader Kara Chesworth (Dysynni CC) after the opening day’s time trial and circuit racing at the Redbridge Cycle Centre, tactics were to play an important role in today’s road race, the final stage of the 2010 Ladies Essex Giro.

Under grey skies, the numerically superior team of Rapha Condor rode superbly  to support Emma’s bid for overall victory and the initial flurries of attacks saw the race start fast. It settled down after two of the five laps of a version of the circuit used for the National Championships a couple of years ago.

Added to the mix were primes with bonus seconds on offer towards the overall result and it was becoming apparent that Rapha Condor were not letting anyone form a break, despite the hard racing.

With such a lot to play for, there was plenty of damage being done behind the peloton with groups of riders spread out around the course. Midway through the final stage and Grant had a scare with a puncture but the good team work of Rapha’s riders showed as they paced her back up to the lead group. Once back, the race was set for a bunch gallop up the finishing climb for the final time where the race was going to be decided.

Anna Fischer (Maxgear RT), having been active going for the primes, was led out perfectly by her team mates to produce a winning kick to the line followed in by Chesworth and Grant. What followed was an anxious wait for riders and spectators alike whilst judges worked out the effect the time bonus’s would have on the overall  result. In the end, Chesworth remained second overall, whilst Grant had slipped to third and the victory went to Fischer.

The final stage and overall winner, Anna Fischer, said afterwards "The plan was to go for the hill primes and my team mates were leading me out just at the bottom of the hill so I was really sheltered and could just attack on the very last part, so I won the primes... and then just hoped for the stage win. My teammate paced me out on the last lap so it was really good teamwork."

"It was a hard race, quite long, the hill was hard too although I like hills so it worked really well for me. I was hoping for maybe a break to go but when Emma went off the back then Rapha [Condor] got the whole team to drive her back. She was riding strong and Rapha [Condor] were riding strong too. It was a good race."

Emma Grant: "I punctured on about lap 3 and we chased so hard, the Rapha [Condor] girls were amazing. Angarahad [Mason] was really strong, worked really hard to get me there and they got me back on. Then we were just trying really hard to make sure no breaks got away. Coming in to the sprint, I got in a good position, it was hard to judge when to go for it, because I thought the finish line was closer than it really was, so I died a bit towards the end and Kara [Chesworth] came through."

Kara Chesworth: "It went alright. It was quite a tough race and a very tactical one  being on my own. I think Rapha [Condor] played it really well. It’s the first time I’ve done stage racing so it’s been really exciting and makes it a little bit different. I really wanted to do well in this one because I’m leading the Series at the moment."
