Castle Combe Summer Series Week 14
Story posted August 9, 2010; Event 5 August 2010, by Andy Cook
The penultimate week of this fifteen week series meant that this was the last week of counting points for the overall series. With Mark Perry away ill, there was a chance that team mate Grant Bayton could overtake Mark for the overall win. Having sat on the beach on a family holiday for the last two weeks, Grant was able to manage 7th on the night moving him to within 3 points of Mark who held onto his precarious lead by one point from Ian Rees who dominated the sprint on the night to take the maximum 10 points and finish on 69 points overall to Mark Perry’s 70.
Will Bergfelt took second on the night to move himself into joint 13th and with Ben Luckwell taking 3rd place on the night, he too moved up significantly to finish above Marcin Bialoblocki for a final 4th place overall meaning that the Wilier/Big Maggys boys had taken the top five places overall in the series.
The Youth races were as keenly fought as they have been all season with the Under 8’s coming down to the wire. With Scott Curtis absent, David Meyer’s consistency paid off and by finishing second on the night, he managed to leapfrog over Scott Curtis who wasn’t present to defend his lead in this category. Dyfan Roberts won the event, repeating his win of the previous week catching many of the Under 10’s in the process who were using the same 1km pit lane course.
The Under 10’s racing has been dominated by two girls, Pfeiffer Georgi and Megan James with Pfeiffer winning the overall series by 53 points from Megan. Consistency again being the key to success with Megan winning on the night from Pfeiffer. Josh Price who is unattached and has taken part in the preceding Go Ride events for the last three years, managed to win the Boys overall in the age category from Chester Powell, another newcomer this season racing for Chippenham Wheelers. Joe Beckingsale finished 3rd overall having won every Thursday evening he turned up which was on six occasions. Lauren Booth finished third girl in this age category and always raced with her usual enthusiasm.
Because of numbers and the standard and level of racing in the Under 12 category, for this year, these guys rode four laps of the big circuit and not to be outdone by his sister, Etienne Georgi won the overall from Peter Kibble and James Tillett. These guys almost took it in turns to swap who won on a weekly basis. Emily Tillett won the overall girls from Cori Robbins and Sophie Taylor. On the night, a very close sprint was awarded to Peter Kibble from Etienne with Lewis Revill in third with the Tillett boys in 4th and 5th.
Having dominated the younger Youth categories at the Castle Combe summer series for so many seasons, the jump up to the Under 14’s didn’t stop Ashley Hutchison from winning the overall series from Tristan Robbins and Dylan Cordukes. Tristan won 6 of the 8 events he rode and was second in the other two. As mentioned in the other categories, the consistent approach paid off for Ash with Bethany Taylor pipping Ffion James to the girl’s title, again due to riding more events in the series. Third girl overall was Katie Hawke. On Thursday evening, Adam Beddall, who was second the previous week, took the win from Tristan with Dylan claiming third from Ash in fourth. Ffion James was fifth and Beth Taylor was seventh.
The racing in the Under 16 series was as keenly fought as any of the youth categories and with many of these riders entitled to “ride up” with dispensation, a number of them chose to concentrate on the senior handicap series that followed the Youth races every week. Dan Marshall was one of these riders who featured in the Senior results a number of times and won the Under 16 overall with 87 points. Second was Luke Cowley who managed a second place in one of the Senior handicap events having ridden the Youth race on the same evening and won that.
Jack Reed finished 3rd overall and was seen a number of times animating the Senior races and featured on a number of occasions in breaks with the Elite riders including getting in a move with Marcin Bialoblocki one evening! The development of these riders during this series of races is one of the most pleasing aspects of the racing with some very high class racing taking place across all the Youth categories and the main handicap event.
Amy Hill won the overall by 1 point from Steph Higgs and Sarah Crowley in third place. On the night a break by Sam Roberts and Charley Bradley-Wielands managed to stick and Charley won the sprint for the win with Dan McKimm another very promising young rider regularly riding with the seniors taking third from Luke Cowley and Dan Marshall with ever present Luke Davies in sixth place.
Next week we intend running two separate Senior races as a pilot rather than the handicap format which was always intended to be of a standard that provided a significant test for the E/1/2’s using it as a training race with the opportunity for the 3rds and 4ths if they got organised to stay clear. However, the level and standard of the E/1/2’s meant that for all but a couple of the fifteen evenings, the 3rds and 4ths were always caught and took all the points on offer. It’s for this reason that the pilot will take place and hopefully riders will be content……
See you all Thursday and again in 2011. If anyone has featured in the results of the Senior events please do let us have your address in order that we can distribute prize money in good time. andy@andycookcycling.com
