Event Details
Round 5 of Team Royal London 360 Isle of Man's youth cycling league, staged at the National Sports Centre in Douglas last Tuesday night, attracted another large entry of 330 competitors. Fortunately, the showers that were forecast for that evening were late arriving and the full race programme was completed in dry conditions.
Returning from a two week break, Chester Bell picked up his maiden win in the novices class. The previously unbeaten Peter Lloyd salvaged second in a close battle with Jemma Quayle, Joseph Corlett, Lisa Martin and Rebecca Walmsley, with Sophie Keen leading the rest of the large field home for seventh. Newcomers Kate Morris and Evan Maher made very good debuts, finishing eighth and twelfth respectively.
Zachary Dowson scored his third success in the born 2006 & later age group, taking the chequered flag with a comfortable lead over Jack Keenan, who outsprinted Cian Jackson and Ivan Sorby for the runners-up spot. Corey Peters and Drystan Sewell completed the top six, while Sophie Smith grabbed the girls' honours in 17th spot.
In the born 2005 race Harry Kneen edged out breakaway partner Niall Colquitt in the final dash for the line. Third placed Mairi Harrison got the better of Chloe Comaish in the tussle for the girls' prize and Oliver Tobin stayed clear of chasers Nathan Cannell and Luke Saunders to claim fifth. Harvey Coole, Albert Kessler and Frank Kinnish rounded off the top ten.
Zac Walker rode clear of the field to maintain his 100% record in the born 2004 category. Joshua Dudley outgunned Dillon Dowson in the gallop for second and Ralf Holden escaped from a five strong chasing group to take fourth. Cameron Dudley beat Oliver Harrison for fifth and James Devereau held off Nathan Slack and Billy Kennedy to snatch seventh. Mia Worthington was the first girl home in twelfth spot.
Recently crowned North West champion Percy Hampton got away from a leading group of six riders to score maximum points in the born 2003 event. Jake Wilson pipped Jonty Bregazzi, Thomas Skillicorn and Jack Christian for second, with Matthew Black just behind in sixth place. Jamie Gelling was a lonely seventh and top girl Darcy Cain beat Jack Collister for eighth. Regular top ten finisher Tyler Hannay slid off on the final lap but remounted to grab 20th position.
Aaron Lund, Will Corkill, James Harrison and Blae Cain fought over the honours in the born 2002 class. Harrison crashed out in the final sprint leaving Lund to secure the win ahead of Corkill and Cain, who were second and third respectively. Corrin Leeming led chasers Jack Whitelegg, Liam Crook and Nicholas Kissack in for fourth.
Peel's Tosh Teare was too strong for Juan Kneen, Adam Scarffe and Max Walker in the dash for the line in the born 2001 three lapper. while Matthew Draper finished well ahead of Sam Mills and Ben Christian in the born 2000 & later grouping.
In the under 10 racing bikes Charlie Gibson, another of our North West title winners, easily took the bunch gallop from Juan Kneen and Aaron Lund, with the ever improving Emily Bridson the top girl in eleventh place. In the following under 12's event Thomas Bostock picked up his first win of the series, outsprinting Callum Clague, Conor Davies, Ben Christian and the hard working NW gold medalist Eleanor Davies.
Josh Knights made an early attack in the under 16 racing bikes and managed to stay out in front for the first quarter of the race. Jake Kelly, Jamie Dudley and Nicholas Corlett eventually joined him at the head of affairs and the four riders stayed clear to the finish where Kelly got the verdict over Dudley in the sprint.
