A popular course with fast twisting roads along with some punchy hills, it is perhaps surprising that the Horsmonden circuit was last used over ten years ago by the South East RR league. However, was it going to be the fast roads that would favour the attacking style of some riders or would it be the swift punchy hills at the back end of the course that would split the bunch?

In the end it was neither! A moment of madness and skill would set the shape of the race. Towards the end of the second lap of six, a driver ignored advice from race marshals and continued to drive towards the oncoming bunch exiting out of a turning causing the riders to scatter with skilful bike handing they managed to avoid any nasty moments.

This in turn caused a significant split in the bunch. With all the elite riders in the first split the advantage was taken leaving the rest of the bunch to chase for the next couple of laps.

With two laps to go Andy Betts took advantage of a moment's hesitation from the others and headed off on his own.

Betts: "After I attacked I figured this may be too early, but an opportunity was there."

His cause was not helped by another motorist not giving way at a narrow bridge although the lead car was already on the bridge, the oncoming car stopped blocking the lead cars exit, bringing Andy to a momentary standstill.

Anthony Mole was also in hot pursuit of Betts, hoping to join forces to the finish. However they were soon joined by three others, Ian Field, Chris Macnamara, and John Veness. Now it was anybody's race again.

Field: "When we all got together I was expecting more attacking, but we all rode together for the last lap, in the last corner before the finish I was slightly ahead leading out, nobody came past me."
