Crowds Flock to Gas Hill

Near Norwich, Norfolk
Event: 8th July 2011
Report: Snowdon Sports

AN enthusiastic crowd of hundreds flocked to Gas Hill near Norwich for the revival event of this once-popular event.

Originally started in the 1940s as a time trial, the event stopped in 2004, but has been revived this year as part of the new Lord Mayor's celebrations.

Now a knockout competition with four in each race, the event proved a big hit with competitors and spectators alike and the unique format is now likely to be copied up and down the country.

Gas Hill was covered four times in each senior race, and the top of the climb resembled a Tour de France mountain pass - such was their enthusiasm.

The competitors, mostly fairly local, found it hard especially at the fourth attempt but ploughed on to the delight of the crowds.

The event was organised by the Lotus Cars Cycle Race League under the rules of British Cycling. Further information can be found on www.norfolkcycling.co.uk
