The Martyn Dobson Memorial Series takes place again in July and August of 2011. The races have been moved from Croft to the new Middlesborough Cycle Circuit.
The series is held in memory of popular local rider Martyn who passed away at only 30 years of age in December 2008 whilst riding through Richmond Park. Martyn started his cycling life with the Cleveland Wheelers at the age of 13 years old. After a couple of years the results started to pour in, with his strength becoming apparent.
Martyn's last race was the 2003 Hartlepool Carnival Road Race. It was in August and, due to a niggling knee injury, was his first race of the year. He rode a perfect race - intelligently, selflessly and strongly, covering the breaks, blocking when his teammates were up the road and resting when possible. He made the final break along with teammate Marcus Smith, and he attacked in the last kilometre. He held the chasers off and took a fantastic lone victory - a fine memory.
Last year's series was won by Matt Kipling of Team Raleigh.
