National Welsh Road Race Champion Dale Appleby (Cycle Premier-Metaltek) secured victory in the John Hinksman Memorial Road Race in Derbyshire on Saturday.
The 24-year-old crossed the line around 20 seconds ahead of the rest of the breakaway after attacking on the final circuit of the 55km course at the Darley Moor Sports Centre in Ashbourne.
Seven riders had broken away on the third of 22 laps of the windswept course, and they quickly took the upper hand and established a lead which they held until the finish.
Appleby had tried to break away alone with two laps remaining but was pulled back. However, he tried again on the final circuit and crossed the line 20 seconds clear of team-mate Simon Wilson, while Dave Crawley (Activ Cycles) was third.
Horizon Fitness RT secured a one-two in the women's race with Hannah Rich and Dani King taking first and second respectively in a bunch sprint finish, while Abergavenny CC's Lowri Bunn took third.
And the supporting Regional B race for 3/4 category riders, RVO Racing's Mick Rowson won a bunch sprint for the line, holding off Peter Collins (Mercia CC).
Richard Birkin (Nottingham Clarion) and Lewis Wilson (Ashfield RC) had escaped with two laps remaining, but were swallowed up by the bunch with just 200 metres to go.
