Location: Lake of Monteith, Scotland
Event: 18 March 2012
Report: Snowdon Sports
Prestwick’s Gary Maher (Ayr Roads CC) claimed his first victory in a seven-up sprint after 47 miles in The Lake APR at Balfron, Scotland on Sunday.
In only his second season of racing, the 37-year-old beat GJS Racing Team’s Craig Adams to win the long-standing event promoted by Glasgow Nightingale CC and covering one lap of the circuit around the Lake of Monteith.
Now entering its fifth decade, the race is sponsored by www.solidrockcycles.com. A recent innovation has been the Feminine APR which is now in its fourth year on the race calendar.
Both races had full fields and competitors had the rare luxury of beautiful spring weather.
Both races were narrowly won by riders from the seeded groups, although the more experienced riders from the scratch group were close behind.
While Maher won The Lake APR, the Lake Feminine witnessed a gutsy performance from Rhona Grant of Dooley’s Cycles who was delighted in her first competitive road event.
