Experience proved key for Paul McSkimming, the Glasgow Road Club rider who took victory in the VC Glasgow South Road Race near Eaglesham in Scotland on Sunday.
The 49-year-old from Carluke in South Lanarkshire edged to victory ahead of Leighton Buzzard RCC’s Jack Beezer, while the final podium spot went to 39-year-old GJS Racing rider John Gartland, from Glasgow.
For long periods the race was a typical fourth cat road race with breaks lasting just a few minutes before the bunch would chase them down then sit up.
It wasn’t until the final few miles that a group of around 13 riders got away as the pace proved too much for many as they tackled three laps of a circuit which took them from Stewarton up to Newton Mearns and back around.
The final circuit saw the riders deviate off and tackle a two-mile climb to the finish near Eaglesham, and it was this climb that saw the groups splinter under the pressure.
The event was the first road race promoted by VC Glasgow South since forming three years ago, and they received compliments on their organisation from all parties.
