Junior Heffernan secured victory in the Glendene CC Summer Road Classic in Essex on Sunday, crossing the line alone at the end of the testing 88-mile race at Great Saling.
The 22-year-old from Yelverton in Devon, who rides for the One and All Cycling/Bike Chain Ricci team, was 41 seconds ahead of his nearest rival at the end of the race, Colin Parry (Wilier-Live2Ride) taking second spot by just one second.
Lydney-based 34-year-old Parry held off Ilford’s Joe Perrett (Ciclos Uno) for second, while CC Luton’s James Fox just missed out on a podium finish, two seconds behind Perrett.
The remains of the bunch trailed in more than a minute behind, but the high pace had forced them to splinter and cross the line in small groups with the final finishers more than five minutes behind Heffernan.
Heffernan’s victory comes after a spell of good form from the youngster.
He took victory in The Only Way is Up Hill Climb Road Race on June 23 against elite opposition, and was third in round four of the Team Tor 2000 Circuit Series on June 28, where the only riders to beat him were two of the best riders in the country – Marcin Bialoblocki (Node 4-Giordana) and James Williams (Primal Europe).
