Attacking over the top of the final climb, Jake Hales (IG-Sigma Sport) stayed clear for the final 900 metres to win an eventful six-lap race on the Steeple circuit.
A touch of wheels a third of the way down the bunch caused carnage on the third of the 11-mile laps and, with the race neutralised, led to a number of retirements.
Once back under way, the remaining field stayed together until approaching the final lap when a flurry of activity off the front produced a six-strong leading group which, although not particularly fluid in their work, established a winning gap over the rest.
Jake Martin (Cycle Premier-Kovert), who had been active throughout, slipped back as his earlier efforts took a toll, but the other five stayed intact until the final short but sharp climb where Hales, from Newport Pagnall, Rob Orr (Velo29) and veteran Roy Chamberlain (Team Corley Cycles) went clear.
Hales, at 20 the junior member of the trio, attacked as they crested the climb, and he made good his escape as a gear problem stifled Chamberlain’s immediate response and left Orr – chasing a weekend double after winning the History of Sport Road race the previous afternoon – to come round him and settle for second place.
Norwich-based Simon Millard (Iceni Velo) made the journey from Norfolk profitable by sprinting clear from what was left of the bunch after punctures and a crash to win the supporting four-lap race for third and fourth categories.
