New Zealander Dan Barry (Node 4-Giordana) secured victory in the Drummond Trophy in Scotland on Sunday, sprinting clear of his breakaway rivals at the end of a tough 87-mile race around Strathaven.
The 25-year-old from Christchurch edged ahead of Team Raleigh’s Evan Oliphant, while the Scot was two seconds ahead of another Node 4 rider, Nathan Edmundson, in third.
Early breaks proved decisive with the race splitting into four groups, each one with around a dozen riders separated by 4-5 minutes.
Rain had made for a slippery course early on, but this dried up after a couple of laps, although strong winds made the going treacherous, especially on the hilly sections, with a cross-wind across the top of the course and a tailwind on the leg back down into Strathaven.
While made on the groups split into ones and twos, The Node 4 pairing of Barry and Edmundson ensured the leaders stayed clear, and Barry took the win from Oliphant, with Edmundson settling for second.
