Experienced campaigner Julian Gromett (Squadra RT) came round James Allen (Langsett Cycles RT) in the closing metres to win the 55-mile We Love Mountains Spring Road Race in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

The pair broke away from a six-man leading group with two miles to go in the eight-lap race and stayed clear to contest the finish, with Duncan Moralee (Strategic Lions Cycling) taking third place ahead of Gromett’s 16-year-old team-mate Alex Dalton and a small gap to Wilsons Wheels duo Pete Fielding-Smith and Nathan Wilson in fifth and sixth.

A full field rolled out of Walkington, near Beverley, under blue skies to start the race and local pair Chris Daddy (Squadra RT) and Karl Downes (Active/CP Cycles RT) were in an early break of three riders.

The leaders grew to a dozen going into the third lap with an advantage of 20 seconds, but the chase was on and the field came back together by the halfway point before Moralee went off the front with a lead of five seconds over four chasers going into the fifth lap.

The five joined up, and Gromett jumped away from the pack to close a gap of 30 seconds on his own and make it six at the front.

Their advantage rose to 2-25 by the bell as the early attacks and overall pace of the race accounted for around a third of the field with Gromett and Moralee launching attacks before Allen slipped away and was joined by the eventual winner.

“James led it out and I went past him in the last 500 metres,” said 37-year-old Gromett, from Grimsby, who was recording his first win of the season. “It was a hard day and they made me graft to get across, riding into a block headwind.

“I’ve changed teams this year and I’m enjoying riding with them as a team at the minute. I’ve got an entry in for the Lincoln Grand Prix, I’m a reserve so hopefully I’ll get a ride, and we’re possibly putting a team in the Tour of Wales.”
