British Cycling Olympic Podium Programme athlete Peter Kennaugh will be taking a break from his Team Sky duties when he rides for the Isle of Man national team in the 2013 University of Lincoln Grand Prix.
Kennaugh replaces Darren Bell in the five man team preparing for the 2014 Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow in 2014.
Twenty three year old Kennaugh has just competed in the classic Tour de Romandie backing up overall winner Chris Froome and with his next event scheduled as the Bayern-Rundfahrt starting on May 22nd the Grand Prix presents an ideal opportunity for him to represent the Isle of Man.
Kennaugh was a member of the Great Britain team pursuit team who smashed the world record twice on their way to the gold medal in the London Velodrome at the 2012 Olympic Games , having previously won the team pursuit world championship earlier that year in Melbourne.
Kennaugh's international success dates back to 2006 when he won the junior world championships scratch event and his prowess led him to a string of successes in European and British title races.
The Isle of Man team will be part of a 160 rider line up for this year’s Grand Prix taking place on Sunday 12 May with the previous day's Lincoln Grand Prix Santini Sportive now heading towards an entry of 1,500 riders. It certainly looks like being a great weekend of cycling in the city.
The University of Lincoln is the second counting event in the British Cycling Premier Calendar of top road races in the country and will be shown on Eurosport on 18 May. The race is also supported by the City of Lincoln Council and is one of the major events taking place in the City.
The finish area with its backdrop of the imposing Lincoln Cathedral and Lincoln Castle is arguably the finest in the country and its route through the city's uphill tourist areas brings the excitement of top class road racing to the public.
A crowd of up to 10,000 can be expected to line the route and the cobbled one in six climb of Michaelgate is a well known feature of the race held over 13 laps of an eight mile circuit.
