Location: Hanbury, Staffordshire
Event: 26 May 2013
Report: Snowdon Sports
Hampshire policeman Richard Phillips-Schofield came out on top in a four-man sprint to take the UK Emergency Services road race title after five laps of the Hanbury circuit in Staffordshire.
The field of 65 stayed pretty much intact for four of the five laps until the quartet went clear last time up the circuit’s major climb.
Working well, they stayed together until the finishing hill where 32-year-old Phillips-Schofield, from Southampton, proved strongest to cross the line ahead of Lee Plant (Stourbridge Velo), Aled Jones (AVSOMPOL CC) and Bruce Wallace (LAB RAT CC) to chalk up his second win of the season.
A four-time British mountain bike champion as a junior and eighth in the 1999 junior world championship, Phillips-Schofield is on the comeback trail after a 12-year break. “I wish now I was a little bit younger!” he said.
“I’m loving it to bits, and hopefully I can get the Emergency Services mountain bike title as well later in the year. I’m doing a little bit better on the MTB circuit than on the road, so fingers crossed.”
