Matthew Holmes headed up a one-two for Raleigh as he and team-mate Graham Briggs dominated the field in round eight CDNW Road Race League.

The Wigan teenager made a break early on before Declan Byrne (MG Maxifuel) pushed on to chase him on the second lap.

The second Raleigh, that of 29-year-old Doncaster rider Briggs, caught up with Byrne and in turn they both bridged across to Holmes.

On the third lap, the Raleigh team made their move and managed to drop Byrne and set about opening up a gap out in front.

With four laps to go, Holmes and Briggs had built up a lead of 30 seconds and were working together on a tough course with some difficult climbs.

The intensity of the course made the field weary and it broke the race up by quite a margin but Holmes and Briggs continued to work and pulled further away.

By the time they crossed the line, they were 52 seconds in front of Byrne who had maintained his position and still had a healthy lead over Matt Pilkington (Metaltek - Knights of Old Racing Team) in fourth.

Speaking after the race, second placed Graham Briggs said: “Even when we had a lead of a minute, we were checking over our shoulders as we could see most of the course which made it a bit easier.

The course was really hilly – we rode 2,000 metres in two-and-a-half hours. There was a steep climb through the finish and another round the back of the course and it really split the field.”
