Fresh from their Tour Series triumph, Team UK Youth showed their strength to dominate the closing stages of St Ives CC’s 125-mile Tour Of The Fens with Marcin Bialoblocki leading a 1-2-3 for the boys in blue.
Niklas Gustavsson and Joshua Hunt followed 29-year-old Bialoblocki over the line to complete a fine day’s work for the team in their final test before next weekend’s British Championship.
An early 15-strong break contained none of the UK Youth riders and their lead stretched out to a maximum of four minutes after around an hour of racing before the bunch reacted.
Recognising the danger, UK Youth drove the chase – spitting riders off the back in the process – at a furious pace and the junction was made on the penultimate fourth lap of the larger starting circuit.
A group of eight riders went clear on the four-kilometre finishing circuit, covered six times – four from UK Youth, three from Node4 Giordana and 18-year-old Ryan Mullen (Team IG Sigma Sport) who had been in the original break.
Heavily outnumbered, Mullen attacked through the bell in a brave attempt to beat the odds, but he was pulled back in and Bialoblocki responded to an attack from team-mate Yanto Barker to go clear in the final kilometre with Gustavsson and Hunt coming through to complete the podium ahead of Dan Barry (Node4 Giordana Racing).
Mullen finished a brave sixth behind Barker, with the eight leaders completed by Node4’s Steve Lampier and Mike Northey who won the prime competition.
