Report: Trevor Taylor/Snowdon Sports
A healthy entry of 40 riders extricated themselves from watching Wimbledon on a dull, drizzly evening to compete in the fifth round of the Ford CC Go Race series.
The initial pace was electric with the peloton well spread out descending the eastern banking only 600m after the start.
The whistle was blown at the end of the first lap to indicate a prime at the end of lap two which was won by Sam Brown.
A second prime was awarded at the end of lap five with Sam again taking the honours. The third and final prime on lap eight was taken by Kevin Attleed (Glendene CC).
Soon after this a strong breakaway developed consisting of five riders, Graeme Garner (Gateway CC), Craig Nichols ( Glendene CC), Jason Fitchew (Ford CC), Chris May and Rob Young (Team Vision Racing ).
They worked well together, and with not enough of the remaining riders having the legs to catch them, they stayed clear to the finish to finish 51 seconds ahead of the pack.
Craig Nichols won the sprint ahead of series leader Jason Fichew with Chris May third. Brian Scarboro had a lucky escape on the final lap, managing to stay upright when his right hand pedal broke whilst winding up for the finish and having to pedal in with one leg.
The sixth race of the series takes place on July 11. Signing on is from 6pm for a 7pm start.
