Location: Great Barford, Bedford, Bedfordshire
Event: 7 July 2013
Report: Snowdon Sports
A former age-group champion on the track, Alex Minting (Neon-Velo.com) proved strongest on the finishing climb to take victory in Bedfordshire Road CC’s 54-mile road race on the Great Barford circuit.
The Bishops Stortford 18-year-old came past Paul Dring (Team Echelon-Rotor) in the closing metres with third place going to Darren Farr (CC Luton).
Thomas Crouch (High Wycombe CC) took the first prime at the head of a break that formed on the first of the six laps, but the field had come back together by half-distance before a crash at the front which saw leader Jon Friend (Bedfordshire Road CC) come down heavily, requiring hospital treatment.
The incident produced another split before the second prime which was taken by Luke Souter (Banbury Star CC), but it was all together again by the bell and it stayed that way until the experienced 39-year-old Dring made what looked to be the winning jump, only for Minting – in only his third road race of the year – to time his late challenge to perfection and lead in the 58 finishers.
