Junior Joe Evans (Hargroves Cycles RT) slipped away from the field in the last four miles to record an excellent solo victory in the final round of the South Staffordshire & Shropshire Cycling Clubs League as the overall honours went to veteran Mike Jones (Paramount CRT).

The race went ahead on an amended 4.8-mile circuit after organisers were faced with a 400-metre stretch of the intended Penkridge course flooded up to 10 inches in depth after overnight storms as well as temporary traffic lights on another section.

“We had overwhelming support from the police who did a marvellous job helping us to change the course and controlling the traffic lights,” said chief commissaire Mike Jackson. “It was the last counting event in the series with a barbecue and buffet planned at the local cricket club for the presentations so we didn’t want to call it off, but we couldn’t have gone ahead without the outstanding help we were given by the police.”

Run as a handicap, the eight-lap race came together on the penultimate circuit and 16-year-old Evans, from Uttoxeter, broke away with four miles to go, opening up a gap of 28 seconds by the finish.

Dan Harris (Clay Cross RT) led home the chasing field in second place. Josh Williams received the Peter Biddle Trophy from his widow June after finishing third.
