Location: Dunton track, Basildon, Essex
Event: 8 August 2013
Report: Snowdon Sports
Craig Nicholls (Glendene CC) took the win in the final round of the Ford CC Summer Series at the Dunton Test Track near Basildon in Essex this week, but second spot was enough for Mick Bath (API) to secure the overall series victory.
With the overall standings being so open an exciting race was promised for the eighth and final race of the series, and we certainly weren’t let down.
54 riders lined up on the start line in absolutely perfect conditions. Amongst this was a none-strong entry from the promoting club, whose aim was to assist Jason Fitchew who lay second in the standings.
The pace was strong from the start and an early prime was set for lap three which was taken by Sam Brown (unaffiliated). There seemed to be attack after attack from then on.
However, with so much at stake there were always enough willing riders to claw the attempts back. The second prime after lap seven was taken by Sam again. The electric pace continued, with the first five laps being completed in 20:20, compared to the normal of around 21:30.
The third prime at lap 11 was taken yet again taken by Sam. However, the last prime at the bell Kevin Attleed (Glendene) took the honours. The race finished on 14 laps, one more than normal within the allotted time, with the sprint being taken by Craig Nicholls (Glendene) followed by Mick Bath (API) and Azelus Christiodhs (unaffiliated).
That result meant that Bath takes the overall series by six points from Fitchew, with Paul Spiceley third.
There were eight riders who had not raced in this series before, this being the first road race for several of them. However, they all rode well in an exceptionally fast race. I do hope they’re not put off and we hope to see everyone next year!
