Securing his third road race victory in five weeks, in-form Lewis Atkins (Pedal Heaven RT) sprinted clear on the climb to the finish to win Maldon & District CC’s 67-mile road race over six laps of the Steeple circuit.
Jason White (BC Private Member), bidding to add to his London Phoenix Road Race win two weeks ago, led out in the charge for the line, but 26-year-old Atkins, from West Drayton in Middlesex, proved the strongest and surged clear to win from Tom Neale (Spalding CC) – who had finished second to White a fortnight ago – with White settling for third.
Racing in glorious autumn sunshine after a delay while the 130 runners in the Saltmarsh 75 long-distance challenge wound their way around the Mayland-Maldon sea wall, a two-man break formed on the opening lap. This was down to one lone leader on lap two before a big push from the main field split the race in two, but it was all back together again by the last lap.
The supporting four-lap race for third and fourth categories also came down to a bunch finish with first-season junior Bartosz Kawka (Finchley RT) coming out on top to record his second road win of the year.
