170 cyclists from all over Scotland descended on Howard Park on Sunday 25th September for the Kilmarnock Criterium Races, incorporating the final round of the Scottish Cycling Youth Road Series and the final round of the Scottish Cycling South West Senior Road Series.
The event, organised by Walkers Cycling Club was the 3rd running of the event which gets bigger and better every year. East Ayrshire Council really got behind the event, providing barriers, sweeping the course and even providing staff to help marshall.
Thankfully the rain from the previous day had stopped and held off until the racing finished. The youth riders started off the day with 5 separate races for different age groups. Local cycling legend Graeme Obree presented the prizes which were supplied by Walkers Cycling.
The youth races were followed by a women’s race and 2 men’s races. The provost came to watch the final race and present the prizes. It is hoped the growing success of this event along with the recent visit of the Tour of Britain will be a catalyst for further development of cycling in East Ayrshire.
