Around 200 riders have already signed up for Gloucester’s first sportive event – and places are filling up fast.
There are just over three weeks to go before the June 1 event, which will see up to 500 cyclists leaving Kingsholm, the home of Gloucester Rugby, for three routes through the Forest of Dean and Gloucester city.
Riders can choose challenging 50km, 100km or 160km courses, with feed stations en route and full mechanical and medical support.
And they’ll all be raising money for Pied Piper – the Gloucestershire charity which buys equipment for sick and life-limited children across the county.
Gloucester and England rugby legends Phil Vickery and Trevor Woodman have already signed up to ride and BBC sports presenter Jill Douglas, who lives near Cheltenham, has given the event her backing.
Sportive organiser Ian Eggleton said the response so far had been phenomenal and urged other riders to sign up before places fill up.
“We’ve had interest from cycling clubs and individuals across the UK,” he said.
“There are a lot of sportives held around the country, but few can match the terrain and spectacular scenery that the Pied Piper Gloucester Sportive promises.
“Kingsholm will be turned into a mini cycling village with trade stands and food outlets, plus Gloucestershire College students will be offering post-ride massages.
“It’s going to be a great day, whether you’re a serious rider or you just like to get out on your bike with the kids at the weekend.
“And of course all the cash raised through sponsorship and registration fees will be going to a great cause.”
All money raised will go to Pied Piper, based at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.
The charity, launched in 1992, buys medical equipment, funds sensory rooms and provides mini buses to individuals and special schools in the county.
