Wolverhampton Wheelers Track League

With the holiday season rapidly approaching, there was a smaller than normal field which meant that some of the categories raced together. Of course this couldn’t be the case for the Freewheelers who as usual provided a lot of entertaining racing with the high point being the Italian Pursuit. Here the team of brothers Dan and Sam Morris, Sam Jones and Seb Bacon could not quite beat Claire Fielding, Alice Hopkins, Matt Lewis and Rebecca Simmons but it was a close run thing.
Only two Youth riders competed; James Ireson (who was riding particularly well tonight) and Ryan Phillips but they both gained some valuable points along with the chance of riding with more experienced athletes. Senior A similarly had only three riders; Jess Wieckowski, Jason Colledge and Tom Masters with Jess taking all the honours but then puncturing at the beginning of the 10 km Handicap.
But it was this final race that was to give the crowd an unexpected yet highly satisfying conclusion to the night. Youth rider Tim Metcalfe who rides up in Senior B, mustered all his energies to take the Intermediate sprint but then in the closest race for some time, went on to take first place over the full 10 km. It was a well deserved win from someone who applies himself to the sport in whatever way he can but this time proved victorious. These sentiments were clearly shared by the crowd.
