2010 European Masters Track Championships
July 27 - 31 2010 | Manchester Velodrome | Event Press Release
Day 5
A frenetic Scratch race closed the third running of the European Masters Track Championships as Neil Campbell fought off fellow Brit John McClelland to win the coveted 64 lap Brian Cossavella Memorial Trophy on Saturday evening. It was the closest fought of the three editions of the race as Wolfgang Kotzman of Austria and Giuseppe Ravasio of Italy fought for the lead as they crossed the line with the bell ringing out across the venue before Campbell sprinted past in the home straight.
Great Britain’s Mari Todd retained her title for the Women’s 30-39 event, now the 35-39 category while Rene Grignon of France and Great Britain's Michael Allen and Dick Cubison gave the podium of the Mens 60-64 Points a complete new look.
Guido Lupo of Italy retained his Bronze in the Men's 65-69 Points with Michel Briat of France and Masters debutante Stefan Munch Hansen of Denmark giving the Gold and Silver medals a new owner. GB's Fred Smith made the move to Gold from last years silver as 2009 Gold and Bronze medallists Otto Altweck of Germany and Britains Brian Dacey were absent this year. Gordon Johnston of Great Britain won his first European medal as he claimed Bronze.
Arja Scarsbrook of Finland set a new European Best Time in qualifying of 2:46.050 in the Women's 50+ 2000m Pursuit as she bettered her time of 2:47.196 set last year, but lost out in the final to Christine Higgs of Great Britain who went faster again in the final with 2:45.897. Louise Burman took the verdict in the ride off for Bronze over Susan Smith, both of Great Britain.
The final medal table shows Great Britain winning over France from 2009 despite the loss of the younger ager groups although Germany, Italy and Finland tally of Golds shows the third spot is now more closely fought for.
