Day 3 - Women's Individual Pursuit | Women's Omnium | Women's Sprint | Men's Keirin | Men's Omnium

Day three at the London Olympic Velodrome saw Sir Chris Hoy take gold in the Keirin in incredible style, while drama struck Matt Crampton. Joanna Rowsell added a second gold medal to her haul in the pursuit while Victoria Pendleton and Jess Varnish battled in the women’s sprint. Ben Swift concluded his Omnium campaign while Laura Trott opened hers in style, with an inspiring win in the elimination event.

MEN'S KEIRIN

Great Britain’s Chris Hoy took an incredible victory to claim Keirin gold in what has become his trademark, crowd-pleasing style. Hoy took fourth wheel behind the derny, slotting in behind danger man Mickael Bourgain of France. With a few laps to go Hoy backed off to create space to run into. Then New Zealand’s Van Velthooven went for a long strike for home with Rene Enders chasing. At the bell, Hoy was still fourth wheel but then exploded around Bourgain and the rest of the field to take an incredible win.

There were fireworks all the way for Hoy, who reached the Keirin final in spectacular style, winning his second round Keirin heat after Matt Crampton crashed dramatically with one lap to go. From the off, Hoy took his favoured position of fourth wheel with Crampton tucked in behind the derny. When the motorbike peeled off Hoy moved up the inside onto Crampton’s wheel. The sprint unfolded and Crampton took it on from the front but crashed on the home straight just before the bell. Hoy and the rest narrowly escaped hitting Crampton and the Scot jumped clear, winning the heat easily. Crampton had reached the second round via the repechage after his heat winner was relegated, part one of a dramatic evening for the Sky rider. Following his crash, he was given the all clear by the team medic and went on to compete in the minor final, eventually finishing 11th, still recovering from his earlier spill.

Hoy's tactic in the final was a carbon copy of his first round win earlier in the day, winning his heat the hard way after Irishman Mullen took an early lunge for home and stretched out the field. Hoy, sitting in fourth wheel had a massive amount of work to do with just one lap to go but stunned the crowd with a trademark ‘from the back’ win, perhaps a little too close for comfort for the big Scot. It was, however a massive hit with the capacity crowd.

Hoy victory also sealed the win in the overall World Cup standings.

WOMEN'S INDIVIDUAL PURSUIT

Great Britain’s Joanna Rowsell, fresh from breaking the world record in the team event, took gold in a thrilling pursuit final against Alison Shanks of New Zealand. Rowsell started hot and took an early advantage, forcing Shanks to react and chase the win. Shanks began to close on Rowsell mid race but the GB rider didn’t panic and Shanks overcooked it in the final third of the race, Rowsell powering to victory in a time of 3:32.364. Minutes earlier, Cure of Australia took the bronze medal, beating Sereikaite of Lithunia in a time of 3:36.707.

Earlier in the morning session, Rowsell was fastest in qualifying in a time of 3:33.496 ahead of Shanks and backed up her qualifying ride in the final.

 WOMEN'S OMNIUM

Great Britain’s Laura Trott ended the Saturday evening session in fine style, winning the Elimination race in dramatic fashion. The elimination marked the halfway point in the omnium and Trott went into the event in eighth position overall. Trott lived dangerously throughout the race, narrowly avoiding the jaws of the devil in practically every sprint. One by one her rivals dropped away, with Laura timing her efforts to perfection. In the end it was Trott versus Whitten and after what the crowd had seen there could be only one winner. Trott's win meant that she had elevated herself to into third overall, with three events remaining.

It wasn't all plain sailing for Trott, who struggled in the qualifying heats and had a tough time in the points. However, a 2nd place in the flying lap and her elimination win meant that she ended the day with bronze in her sights.

WOMEN'S SPRINT

Shuang Guo of China won gold in the women’s sprint, beating World Champion Anna Meares 2-0 in the final after the Australian had endured an epic tussle with Great Britain’s Victoria Pendleton.

Pendleton faced Meares in the semi finals after beating her teammate Jess Varnish 2-0 in the quarters. The Pendleton/Meares semi was massively absorbing. In the first match Meares led it out from the start and held off Pendleton to take the match. However match two saw Pendleton come around the long way to nick it on the line. Come the decider and Pendleton took it from the front. The GB rider led Meares up and down the track but Meares had some tricks of her own, diving up the inside of Pendleton and streaking clear to take the win and progress to the final.

Pendleton faced Lee in the bronze medal rideoff, the Hong Kong rider impressive all day. Pendleton took the first match but Lee responded and levelled the score in the second. Come the decider and it was clear that the battle with Meares had taken its toll, with Lee winning and claiming bronze.

After losing to teammate Pendleton in the quarters, Jess Varnish had a convincing win in the 5th-8th final, coming over the top from a long way back to take the victory. Later she commented: "To finish fifth in the sprint is the highest that I’ve finished in an individual sprint competition. I was really happy, I’ve been racing against those girls since we were juniors and to beat them here was good, I changed my gear and tried a different tactic.”

“It was a good day’s training,” commented Pendleton. On whether yesterday’s efforts in the women’s team sprint had taken some toll on her, she added: “I don’t think you break a world record without taking a little bit out of yourself, the performance yesterday was way beyond what I expected - you can’t go to sleep buzzing after doing a performance like that and be in top shape the next morning. There were a lot of fresher legs out there. “

MEN'S OMNIUM

Great Britain’s Ben Swift finished his Omnium campaign in sixth place, with Arango of Colombia taking a convincing victory, through consistent finishes throughout the six events.

Swift was poised in 4th place coming into the final event, the kilo, with a bronze medal on the cards, after producing an excellent ride in the Pursuit (4th) and in the Omnium scratch race, taking a lap with seven other riders, policing attacks in the latter half of the race then winning the final sprint in convincing style. However, strong rides from Zach Bell (CAN) and Arango combined with an 11th place finish for Swift in the kilo saw him drop to sixth in the final reckoning.

Ben Swift said: “A little but up and down, the points race should have been one of my stronger disciplines but I underperformed there quite badly and the flying lap which was quite a disappointment because I was going quicker in training, I just didn’t get that right on the day.

“I like a devil and getting stuck into that, good for morale and I had a good pursuit which was a bit unexpected really, I have been doing a lot of pursuit training in the team pursuit but that’s a new personal best. Once I knew I was out of contention to win overall I just wanted to win one race, the scratch race was the best opportunity to do that and the crowd was unreal, it has been a fantastic few days.”
