The final two rounds of the British BMX Series were held at the legendary location that is Bournemouth. With camping being available from Thursday until Tuesday and the glorious beaches, 414 riders came to race on Bournemouth's tight and fast track. This weekend was extra special for many riders as it was where national titles were decided.
6 & unders
Ten riders in the 6 and under and a couple of these riders being well under 6 and managing to get round every track this year without a problem. On day one Ben Perry from Derby took the win by beating Cory Maggs who rides for Ultimate BMX and Elliot Bowyer from MK. Ben Perry didn't do as well the next day and finished 8th, Jack Hawkins took the win for Ultimate BMX, Cory Maggs had the same result as day one with a second and William Goode certainly rode good and came 3rd improving on his 4th from day one.
7 Years
Ethan Craik is the British Number 1 in the 7 year olds in his first year of racing and if this kid keeps going like he is now I'm sure he'll win many more national titles, but then again he'll have to fend off other great riders like Alex Brookes, Keon Smith-Mcdermott and Travis Diwell-Wilson. Day one saw an almighty battle in the final between Keon and Ethan in the second turn as Ethan tried to swoop Keon for first but he just couldn't get the grip on the turn and slid out onto the floor which resulted in him having 8th. Keon stayed on and took the win followed by Alex Brookes and Travis Diwell-Wilson. Keon won Day 2 with Ethan Craik playing it safe this time by settling for second with Alex Brookes taking a deserved third.
8 years
Day one in the 8 year olds was won by Kobi Joyce who showed everyone that Bournemouth was his home track by winning every single lap which was the first time he has done that this season. He wasn't as lucky on day two as the national champ Ryan O'Loughlin took the win. Matt Hutt almost got himself 2nd but he slipped his pedal on the third straight and the 2nd place was quickly stolen by Ryan Brookes, Nick Oaten did very well and grabbed the 3rd spot.
9 years
Ross Cullen has dominated the class all year, which makes him the national number one; he won both days in Bournemouth. Day ones 2nd place went to Taylor Johnson of Intense/Route 55, but he was unlucky and missed out on the A Final on the day two. Josh Coppin took 2nd place on day two and was followed by EA/Pure's Josh Peters who seems to try so hard when he races, every lap he is full throttle do or die, I'm sure next year Ross Cullen, Josh Coppin and Josh Peters will be extremely close on the track.
10 years
Is one of the most stacked age groups with Gideon Orena, Ethan Vernon, Shay Casey and many others. Day one's semi final saw a very tight pack go around the first turn, Ethan was at the front and jumped the double out of the first turn and got caught by the wind, it looked like he had only put his foot down as he finished the lap and came about 3rd or 4th. When it came to the final he couldn't race as he'd broken his ankle in the semi final! Hardcore or what!?!! Gideon Orena took the win on day one securing his national number one Place, Euan Hunt took second on day one but took the win on day two, Shay Casey took third on day one but crashed on day two which meant Lewis Locker took the 3 spot.
11 years
4 or 5 riders could have won the National title, so this final weekend was crucial. Day 1 saw Benji Armitage do Kuwahara proud and take the win. Benji was followed by a tight pack where 4 riders looked like they all crossed the line at the same time but George Moret got second with Josh Legrove Grabbing third. Day two saw a very dramatic final involving Harley Taylor. Harley hit the gate pretty hard and was last by a mile, Harley then managed to battle his way through the pack over taking riders like there was no tomorrow. Harley finished first but lost out on the national title by 5 points to Haydon Green who finished second and secured his title as National Number 1.
12 years
Day one saw Daigoro Fortune come so close, yet so far away from a national win in his first year of racing nationals. Daigoro led the races from the beginning but a slipped pedal on the last straight, which caused him to fall and Kye Whyte breezed past him and took the win. Lee Golder had one of his best results of the season and came third. Day two, Kye Whyte took the win and was followed by Team Bunneys' Ben Carnill in second with Tom Novis securing his national number 2 plate with a third.
13 years
For his 10 races that count, Jimmy Orena won every single lap this year with a perfect 540 points being is the only male rider to achieve this. Day one saw Jimmy Orena win, with Jordan Hatcher on his home track pulling a second. Elliot Pateman had a well deserved 3rd on his home track. Day two saw Jimmy and Jordan first and second again, but Elliot went out in the semis and Roy Jones took the third with a very "Rad" Paddy Sharrock grabbing fourth.
14 years
The last few rounds have been very exciting for this age group as Quillan Isidore who dominated the age group at the beginning of the year picked up an injury and hasn't been able to ride in the last 4 races. At Bournemouth the title was up for grabs as 3 riders were separated by only a few points. Day 1's final was invaded by Team Bunneys as Josh Tucker and Micheal Njuguna took 1st and 2nd. Harry "Stick" Stickley keeps on getting quicker but on this occasion Stick hit the gate and settled for third. Day two was won again by Josh Tucker, Callum Wing came second, which earned him the National Number 1 title by 2 points from Quillan.
15 years
Dan Pullen and Ryan Stack have been battling it out all year but Ryan has been unlucky a few times this year with crashes so Dan Pullen has won the national number 1 title. Day 1 was won by Dan, winning every single lap that day. Dan was closely Followed by Ryan Stack and 3rd was earned by Andover/Redman Rockstar's George Warner who is improving with every race. Day two had an exciting final as there was a tight pack going around the first turn. Ryan over cleared the double which made him wobble and crash on the step up step down almost taking a few riders with him, but Bradley Minns and George Warner stayed up and grabbed 2nd and third.
16 years
Day one saw a great race in this age group, Michael Hawker got the hole shot and was leading and then there was a charge from Jack Smallpeice who knows the Bournemouth track like the back of his hand. Smallpeice gave Hawker a light elbow on the second turn and took the lead. Jack managed to keep the lead and win his first ever national race on his home track. Toby Bearne managed to get second and Michael has to settle for third. Day two saw Toby Improve on his second and take his first national win, Michael Hawker was close behind in second and Jack Smallpeice took third.
17-24 men
Has been a very entertaining class to watch all year, with riders like Ash Davey, Robbie Goodman, and Robert Hawker, but in the end the national title went to Billy Luckhurst. Day one had a very exciting final, Robbie Goodman used his first straight pull to holeshot, but Billy Luckhurst was close behind and gaining with Ash Davey close behind in 3rd. Billy nudged Robbie on the second turn to over take and ended up taking the win. The "nudge" slowed Robbie down slightly and Ash Davey took advantage of this and over took Robbie for second, with Maris Strazdins taking 4th. Day two saw the world's closest semi final as 6 riders went into the last turn at the same time. Nathan Routledge used his home track skills and berm brutality to make it to the final. Robbie and Billy were close on the line in the final but Robbie took the win this time, Billy took second and Robert Hawker did very well taking the number 3 spot.
25-29 men
Has been close all year between Michael Smart and Gareth bates. Michael took the win both days at Bournemouth and is now the national number 1. Michael also did this on flat pedals which is pretty Rad achievement. On both days, Michael was followed by Ben Martinez-a Villegas from Birmingham with Bournemouth local James Chadwick taking third on day 1 and Robert Reed taking third on day 2.
Masters
Is one of the most stacked classes in the country, even though it seems to be a tradition to race with a hangover? Rich Townsend took his first ever national win with Alan Hill taking 2nd, Matt Barnard in 3rd and Zoltan Buday in 4th. Zoltan Buday won Day two, Dave Godfrey had his best result all year and finished in second, Alan Hill finished 7th but this didn't affect his series ranking as he finished first by almost 100 points.
Veterans
Only had 7 riders down at Bournemouth so it was run to a Grand Prix format, which means every lap counts. Freeagent's Lee Alexander won day one, and second place went to Steve Mardy Boy Williams from Norwich and third place went to Ady Warden (Groove BMX). Day two was won by Nigel "Daddy" Whyte coming out of Peckham, Second went to Mick Gough who even pulled a bit of a table top into the first turn on the final lap.
Junior Men
Has been quite close all year, but Grant hill has taken the national number one title, thanks to many of his last turn moves and straight up power. Junior men is usually full of Chaos and this weekend was no different, with Jack Hall almost winning his first 2010 national and Ryan Bauer riding into photographers. Day one's first place went to Grant Hill and Curtis Manaton who has kept it consistent all year took 2nd followed by Jordan Hayes in 3rd. Day two was won by Grant Hill, but Jack Hall made a last turn move but failed to make it stick and went down and earning a nasty gash on his knee. Ben Clarkson took the 2 spot and Curtis took 3rd.
Elite Men
Elite was very eventful this weekend and with Kelvin looking like he couldn't get the hang of Bournemouth's gate, late moves were on the agenda. Dan Whyte was also looking ruthless in every turn, so the event was set for a great finale. Day one was quite manic on the last turn, where Dan Whyte went on the inside of Kelvin after Kelvin had made contact with Marcus. Marcus slowed down on the last straight not realising Dan was right behind him, Dan got it on the line making it his first ever elite win. Day two was just as hectic, Kelvin got pay back on Dan in the second turn and Marcus learned from the mistake he made on day one and took the win. Kelvin got the second and Calum Strickland took third.
Girls
The 6 and under girls was won by Emily hutt both days. Emily's won every race this year and is starting to do a bit of jumping, so watch out for her in the future. The 7-8 year old girls were won by Darcie Taylor on day one, but on day two she crashed and Imogen Hill took the win. 9-10 year olds girls has become a pretty big class with 16 riders and Kim Baptista came out on top both days, Olivia Howard was close behind and got second on day one and Mary Johnson from the north east got second on day 2. The 11-12 year old girls has been mixed up all year but Lauren Stack has been consistent and took second on day one with Alesi Tye taking the win. On day two they switched places. 13-14 year old girls has been another close category, Beth Campbell made a return from a broken wrist and got second on day one but turned it up a notch on day two and took the win, Angelica Orena took the win on day one and Valerie zebrakova took 3rd. 25 and over ladies was won by Claire Morrison on day one, which was very well deserved for her. Ria Goodman took the win on day two but that didn't stop Claire from winning the overall National Number 1 title.
Championship Girls
This age group has been full of great racing all year, and Bournemouth was no exception. Charlotte Green has been dominant all year and took the win on both days. Ria Goodman came home in second on both days and Emily James kept the pattern going and took third on both days. Day two saw yet another Rad crash from Amelia Silvestre as she flew into the middle of the track and she still got up and finished the lap. She must be one of the toughest girls out there.
Cruiser 30-34
With 8 riders on day one it was a tough grand prix, but Dave Ives took the win representing the Gold Coast and SE Racing. Day two saw 3 riders pull out, one of them was day one's winner, but Andrew Drelincourt took advantage of this and bagged himself his first ever national win. The National title was won by absent Dialled Bikes rider Neil Harbour who had never won a national race let alone an entire series.
Cruiser 35-39
Was won by the almighty Alan Hill on both days which meant he doubled up on national titles. On day one he was followed by Kuwahara's Paul Eccles who had a bad crash on day two and seemed to get his leg caught in his bike. Darren O'Brien crashed with Paul and cracked his head open so there was blood on his face but he still got up and finished the lap.
40-44
Day one was won by Bournemouth BMX club's fastest member Jon Moore, who used his home track advantage to take the win, but right on his tail was Karl Sanderson from Mid Lancs. Day two saw Karl beat Jon on his home track, so Jon had to settle for second, but he still got the over National title.
45+
It was grand prix for these guys and World #4 Keith Wilson who kept it smooth in all of his laps to win on both days. On day one Ady Warden put his years of racing experience to use and got second, but on day two Billy Stupple seemed to have the edge on Ady and took second.
Club Report: Hayes Hawks Crowned 2010 British Club Champions
Hayes Hawks BMX Club are the newly crowned National Club Champions after competing in 12 British Cycling National events throughout 2010. The final race was held over the August Bank Holiday in Bournemouth.
Club Chairman Scott Dick, said " This is an immense victory for the club, its riders and volunteers. Everyone has worked so hard this season and I cannot thank them enough. Things were looking a bit dodgy in the build up to this last event as one of our top riders got injured and could not compete, so another rider, Dan Longhurst, from Hillingdon, stepped up to the plate from the Club to race the Cruiser event and he made it to the final, only to crash and injure himself. So he literally put his body on the line for us. We knew it was going to be close, but after sat's race we were in the lead by 132 points with a max of 6 wins, which put us in a good place for Sun's race. On Sunday we got another 4 wins with some good 2nds and 3rds which gave us the title."
Club Coach Lew Robinson said ""This year all our riders really stepped it up another level and all their hard work has really paid off. The riders have shown pure grit and determination throughout the season, especially when things haven't gone their way. They just kept at it all year and we've had some fantastic results. I know they will do us proud again at the British Champs, and into next season. Well done guys."
Over 60 clubs competed in the British Cycling BMX National Series during 2010 and now the club turn their attention to the largest BMX Race at Chedder, Somerset, the British BMX Championships on 18/19th Sept. This event will see around 800 riders competing and the Hawks again will be favourite to take the honours.
The Club plan to have a small celebration and presentation this coming Sat 4th Sept at their Club Race at Lake Farm Country Park, Dawley Road. It is hoped that World Champion and Olympic finalist Shanaze Reade will be there to make the presentation.
The Club host Club Session's every Sat from 11.00am -2.00pm. They also supply bikes and safety equipment, together with a qualified British Cycling Coach at these sessions , which are only £4.00 to non members. The club welcome new riders and will also be hosting two British Cycling Go Ride Races at the track this sat from 1.00pm and Sat Sept 25th at 1.00pm. These races are for any new riders who fancy a go at BMX Racing.
