Make sure your club are ready for the ever-increasing levels of interest in cycling.
Running an event is a great way of introducing new riders to your club by showcasing your club and advertising everything you have to offer. It will help to raise the profile of your club and if advertised in the right places will appeal to a wide audience of potential club members. Events can also help to create vital revenue for your club.
What type of event should our club run?
This will probably depend on the type of club you are and the facilities you have at your disposal. You will also need to assess where your expertise lie, it might be that you have a vibrant cyclo-cross section of your club and members with lots of experience of setting up courses. Remember you will need a small army of volunteers from the club to make the event a success so they will need to buy into the event!
There is also the question of whether to run a competitive or non-competitive event with the growth in the Sportive and off road event market. Our advice is the best place to start is where you have most experience and then branch out.
Whether you are planning to run a sportive or a race then it's a really good idea to include some entry level rides or races. For a sportive this might mean offering a shortened or even family friendly version of one of the routes, for racing you may wish to have a Go-Race or in the case of road and closed circuit events a 4th Cat only race. This will ensure your event will be open to those just getting interested in cycling and gives you an opportunity to promote the benefits of club membership to them.
What support is available from British Cycling?
Here at British Cycling we have a dedicated regional support team, with a club and group developer in each region. Their role is to help clubs and groups to access support and funding, plus guide you through the event organisation process from registration to debrief, focusing on Go-Ride Racing and Go-Race.
Cycle sport developers can also support you to run competitive events. Contact your local cycle sport developer.
Once you have discussed your event with the relevant member of the team, you can register your event using our Event Management System. When your event has been approved you can use our online entry system which offers a cost effective and user friendly system to manage entries. This is FREE for Event Organisers to use!

When do we need to register our event?
There are no strict deadlines for registering an event but best practice is; the earlier the better. By submitting events early this allows the calendar to take shape and therefore lessen the chances of events clashing in local areas. Check the calendar for the last few years as there are some big annual events that tend to run at the same time each year and you probably wouldn’t want to run a brand new event at the same time as these.
